Total Apex Take

The password-sharing crackdown worked financially — the harder question is whether the content strategy is keeping pace with the subscriber growth.

Say what you want about the paid-sharing rollout being user-hostile; it drove real subscriber and revenue growth, and the ad-supported tier turned into a legitimate second business line rather than the afterthought it looked like at launch. Live programming — WWE Raw, NFL games, high-profile boxing — has been the more interesting bet, because it's the one thing a library of on-demand films can't replicate.

Our honest take on the originals slate: the hit rate is inconsistent in exactly the way you'd expect from a studio greenlighting by algorithm first. For every genuine case for original filmmaking, there are several algorithm-chasing titles clearly built to hit a runtime and a genre tag rather than tell a specific story. The library's real strength right now is licensed international TV, not the splashy original films Netflix still promotes hardest.

If you want to use Netflix well, the sports and live events are the differentiator; the original-film catalog is where you need the most curation to avoid noise.

About Netflix

Netflix began in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail rental service co-founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, well before it became a streaming company. It launched video streaming in 2007 as an add-on to its mail service, then gradually shifted its entire business toward streaming over the following decade, discontinuing DVD shipments in 2023.

The company moved into original production with House of Cards in 2013, a strategy it has since expanded into one of the largest original content budgets in the industry, spanning licensed library titles, Netflix-produced films and series, and international productions distributed globally.

Netflix is widely recognized as the largest subscription video streaming service in the world by subscriber count, a position it has held since the early years of the streaming era even as competitors from nearly every major studio have since launched their own services.
