Netflix new releases this week span a Steinbeck adaptation, a sea-monster thriller and a crime drama from Ben Affleck, as the streamer rolls out a heavy October slate of originals. The month opened with several high-profile premieres already live, and more arrive through mid-October, including the return of a critically praised political drama.

Florence Pugh headlines East of Eden, a seven-episode miniseries adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series also stars Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders. Zoe Kazan created the adaptation, a notable family connection given that her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the original 1955 feature film version of the Steinbeck story. Decider noted the series is adapted from Steinbeck’s 1952 novel set in early 20th-century California and counted it among October’s most anticipated arrivals.

New Netflix Titles Already Available This Week

Below, a Canada-set thriller miniseries, launched Oct. 8. The show follows a mysterious sea creature terrorizing a small Newfoundland town and stars Josh Hartnett alongside Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, Natasha Henstridge and Joshua Close, per The Hollywood Reporter. Readers can find a full breakdown in Total Apex’s review of Below.

Animals premiered Oct. 9. The crime thriller centers on a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped, pulling the couple into a web of deception. Ben Affleck stars, produces, co-writes and directs the project, which also features Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington and Steven Yeun. The Hollywood Reporter noted Animals marks Affleck’s second consecutive Netflix feature of 2026, following The Rip earlier in the year.

Decider also flagged several other October titles drawing attention, including Nobody Wants This Season 3, a continuation of the rom-com series; Lupin Part 4, described as a long-awaited return for the fan-favorite heist series; Hollywood Arts; and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which comes back with a standalone season built around four hired guns in the Cyberpunk universe. A four-part Netflix Original docuseries on former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, titled TYSON, also made Decider’s list of the month’s top new shows.

What’s Coming Later This Week On Netflix

The biggest returning title on the Netflix release calendar this week is The Diplomat, which comes back for a fourth season on Oct. 15. Keri Russell reprises her role as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler, with Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn and Rory Kinnear also returning. Season 4 continues to follow Wyler as diplomatic relationships fracture amid a fragile peace between the United States and the United Kingdom, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One day later, on Oct. 16, Netflix adds Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, a documentary series from Judd Apatow chronicling the life of the late comedian. The project draws on archival footage, personal photos and home videos to tell Macdonald’s story.

Why This Week’s Slate Matters

The October lineup leans heavily on literary adaptation and star power, pairing Pugh’s East of Eden with Affleck’s writer-director-star turn in Animals. The Diplomat’s return gives Netflix a proven awards contender back in rotation, while the Norm Macdonald docuseries from Apatow adds a nonfiction entry built around archival material rather than new interviews. Together, the releases give subscribers a mix of limited series, returning dramas and documentary programming within a single two-week stretch.
