Netflix has ordered two seasons of “The Apology,” an A24 drama that will give Gwyneth Paltrow her first leading role in a television series, according to Deadline. The streamer picked up the show straight to series after buying the competitive project preemptively, the outlet reported.
The order marks a significant career shift for Paltrow, who built her reputation on film work. Her previous series work came in guest and supporting roles, including an Emmy-winning turn on “Glee” and a part in Netflix’s “The Politician,” but she has never been the lead.
Netflix commits to “The Apology” up front
Netflix’s straight-to-series order for “The Apology” skips the pilot stage entirely, committing to two full seasons up front. Deadline reported that Netflix moved on the project preemptively, taking it off the market before rivals had a chance to bid.
A24 is producing the series alongside Cut To, the A24-based production company led by Joe Hipps. Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, who won an Oscar for “Another Round,” is attached to direct, marking his U.S. television directing debut. Joe Murtagh, who created the 2023 BBC One series “The Woman in the Wall,” wrote the scripts and will serve as showrunner. Paltrow, Vinterberg, Murtagh and Hipps are all executive producers.
What the series means for Paltrow
For Paltrow, “The Apology” represents new territory. She’ll carry a series as its lead for the first time, a notable departure after decades of working primarily in film.
Landing a straight-to-series order also gives the project a level of security that pilot-based shows don’t get. Both seasons are already greenlit, meaning the creative team can plan the full arc of the story from the outset rather than waiting on a pickup decision after a single season airs. That kind of commitment has become rare at Netflix, which has largely moved away from multi-season orders for new shows, TheWrap noted.
A confession 18 years in the making
Paltrow will play Evelyn Amspoker. She and her husband, Caleb, lost their son to a murder 18 years earlier in a cold case that gripped the nation. When a stranger comes forward with a confession, the couple discovers the killer could receive a reduced sentence. That revelation pushes them to take matters into their own hands, according to the show’s official logline.
The premise plays to the strengths of the team behind it. Vinterberg’s films, including “The Hunt” and “Another Round,” put ordinary people under extraordinary pressure, while Murtagh’s “The Woman in the Wall,” a gothic mystery about the legacy of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, gave him experience building character-driven mystery narratives for television before taking on “The Apology.”
What’s next
Deadline’s report did not include a production timeline, episode count or premiere date for “The Apology,” and no other cast members have been announced. As Netflix and A24 move the drama into production, further casting and scheduling news is likely to follow.
