Mindy Kaling is stepping in front of the camera for “Running Point” Season 3. The Netflix comedy’s co-creator and executive producer will play Divya, the outspoken CEO of a popular gambling app, in a recurring role, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
It’s Kaling’s first on-screen part in the series. Divya joins a cast led by Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, who runs the Los Angeles Waves, her family’s professional basketball team.
The role: Who is Divya in Running Point Season 3?
According to the character description, Divya is proudly the first female leader in her male-dominated field. That puts her in a similar position to Isla, who’s carving out her own place in the sports world.
Their similarities end there. THR notes the two won’t necessarily get along, and the official breakdown says Divya becomes a thorn in Isla’s side, setting up potential friction between them as Season 3 unfolds.
Kaling’s dual role on the project
Kaling’s new acting credit sits apart from her behind-the-scenes work on “Running Point,” where she remains a co-creator, writer and executive producer alongside Ike Barinholtz and showrunner David Stassen. Her producing and writing duties predate this casting. The on-screen part as Divya is new to Season 3.
“Running Point” is now filming in Los Angeles. Hudson will also direct the Season 3 premiere, marking her TV directing debut.
Kaling’s recent acting history
Playing Divya is Kaling’s first on-camera role since 2023, when she last appeared as Audra on Apple TV’s “The Morning Show,” THR reported. She has done voice work since then, but most of her recent output has centered on writing and producing rather than performing.
Kaling’s return to acting on a show she also produces gives her a hand in both shaping the story from behind the scenes and portraying one of its new characters directly.
What’s next for Running Point Season 3
Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for Season 3. Along with Hudson and Kaling, the cast includes Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Fabrizio Guido, Chet Hanks, Toby Sandeman and Justin Theroux. Ray Romano, Uche Agada, Ken Marino and Jay Ellis will appear in recurring roles, according to Variety.
