Netflix has set an “Empress of Flames” release date of Dec. 3, the streamer announced alongside a first look at the Thai historical drama. The series brings a new version of a well-known Thai story of royal betrayal and revenge to a global audience.

The show is set in the Thipaya Kingdom, also called Muang Thip, which the Thipayawongse Dynasty ruled for more than 300 years, according to Netflix. The story follows Queen Tawanthip, known as the “Demonic Queen,” whose reign of tyranny ends when King Phuka overthrows her and founds the Phuka Luang Dynasty.

What We Know About “Empress Of Flames”

Khemanit Jamikorn plays Queen Tawanthip, while Napasranch Mittiraroch takes on the role of King Phuka, according to Netflix. Sivaroj Kongsakul directs the series, which comes from the team behind Master of the House, a previous hit for the group.

Netflix describes the story as a battle for the throne built around ambition, personal vendettas and revenge, with character motivation driving the plot. Kongsakul said the goal was to expand on the original tale without losing what made it resonate.

“I wanted to preserve the heart and essence of the story while adding more detail and depth, particularly to the characters and their life journeys,” Kongsakul said. “Audiences will get to see each character’s journey, along with the circumstances and motivations behind their actions.”

The production team built out the series’ world in detail, including a map of the fictional kingdom, distinct designs for individual cities and costumes that change by location to reflect where each character comes from.

Why It Matters

“Empress of Flames” arrives as Netflix continues to expand its slate of international historical dramas, drawing on a Thai story already familiar to audiences in the region. Pairing the creative team from “Master of the House” with a built-out world and costume design suggests Netflix is betting on the same creative chemistry that worked on its predecessor.
