Slough House is getting crowded. Apple TV announced Monday that Varada Sethu, Tuppence Middleton, Joshua McGuire, Ethan Moorhouse and Merab Ninidze have joined “Slow Horses” Season 7, Variety reported. James Callis will also return as Claude Whelan, the former head of MI5.

The news arrived two days before the Season 6 finale, which streams Wednesday.

The roles and job details

Apple hasn’t said who any of the five newcomers will play or how many episodes they’ll appear in. Callis is the only returning cast member named in the announcement, though Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb leads the series and the season’s story is built around his team.

Ninidze isn’t completely new to Slough House. He’s credited as Russian spy chief Vassily Rasnokov in earlier episodes, a brief role, so Season 7 may give that character more to do. Apple hasn’t confirmed it.

The project so far

Season 7 adapts “Bad Actors,” the eighth novel in Mick Herron’s Slough House series. According to Apple’s official synopsis, Lamb and the Slow Horses must track down and stop a mole hidden deep inside the British government before the mole can topple it. In the book, Whelan is pulled back in to find a missing member of a government think tank, and the trail leads straight to Diana Taverner. That explains why Callis is back.

The six-episode season also marks a new creative lead. Will Smith adapted Seasons 1-5 before leaving the show, and Gaby Chiappe took over for Season 6. Ben Vanstone, creator of “All Creatures Great and Small,” adapted Season 7 for television and serves as an executive producer. Robert McKillop, who directed the BBC comedy “Ludwig,” directs the season.

The new cast’s recent work

Sethu played Ann Baxter in “The Other Bennet Sister” and Doctor Who companion Belinda Chandra, and she appeared in “Andor” and “Jurassic World Dominion.” Middleton’s credits include “The Forsytes” and “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” and she played Sara Mankiewicz opposite Oldman in “Mank.” That makes Season 7 something of a reunion.

McGuire is a BAFTA nominee for “The Gold.” Moorhouse appeared in “MobLand” and worked with McKillop on “Ludwig.” Ninidze is known for “Homeland” and “The Courier.”

What’s next

Season 7 has already been filmed, but Apple hasn’t announced a premiere date. Apple has also renewed “Slow Horses” for Season 8, which will adapt Herron’s latest novel, “Clown Town.”
