Spoilers follow for “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.”
The “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2” ending breaks from the franchise’s grim tradition. Unlike the first season’s bloodbath, most of the Netflix anime’s core cast is still standing when the credits roll, a sharp departure from the original series. The season arrived on Netflix on Oct. 20, and showrunner Bartosz Sztybor has explained why the tone shifted, even as Netflix and CD Projekt Red have said nothing official about a Season 3.
What actually happens at the end of Edgerunners 2
In the original “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” which premiered in September 2022, nearly every main character died, with only one getting anything close to a soft landing. [IGN](INSERT IGN ARTICLE URL) noted that Season 2 flips that pattern, with most of its main characters getting a “happy” ending of sorts.
“Of sorts” is doing a lot of work. The finale still has a body count: Talia’s father, Kiril, and former Arasaka scientist Kyoko both die in the Badlands battle, GamesRadar+ reported. Weak survives when the urn holding Avida’s ashes stops the bullets meant for him, and he ends the season looking after Talia, who has merged with the AI construct Capri. D’s fate is left deliberately open, with his final leap toward the sky never fully resolved. Roman, the 12-year-old filmmaker at the center of it all, makes it out and gets the season’s last shot.
Surviving isn’t the same as winning, either. What’s on Netflix pointed out that nearly everyone except Roman ends the season with their life in pieces.
Why did the showrunner change the ending’s tone?
Sztybor told IGN the shift comes from leaning into the franchise’s noir roots rather than away from them. “Cyberpunk originated from noir, and in noir, there is always a character versus the city,” he said, adding that the core idea is that no one ever beats the city or the system.
For Sztybor, that doesn’t mean every outcome has to be a funeral. He argued that surviving on your own terms is its own kind of victory within that noir framework. You don’t bring down the evil corporation, he told IGN, but you might save yourself, make one defining choice or sacrifice yourself for someone you love, and staying true to who you are until the very end counts as a happy ending, too. He still calls it a tragedy, just one that reflects real life.
That philosophy plays out through the supporting cast as well. Omi, a Nomad voiced by Analesa Fisher in the English dub, is a survivor at heart. Fisher told What’s on Netflix the character is about doing whatever it takes to survive, and that the best revenge is simply to keep living. That’s a sharp contrast to D, whose path is far more self-destructive.
The season also follows Roman, who documents everything around him with an analog video camera, according to Anime News Network. The show uses his handmade footage as a counterpoint to braindance, the immersive recorded-experience technology native to the Cyberpunk setting. Kai Ikarashi directed the season.
Does this ending set up Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 3?
No Season 3 has been confirmed. There’s no release date, cast or production schedule for another season. What exists instead is a structural setup that makes a continuation possible without requiring one.
CD Projekt Red has built both seasons as standalone stories rather than chapters of one continuous arc. Season 1 was announced in June 2020 during a Night City Wire livestream as a 10-episode series, and Season 2 was confirmed at Anime Expo in July 2025 as its own standalone story with an entirely new cast.
Sztybor hasn’t closed the door. “There’s a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond, so you never know,” he told ComicBook.com after the finale. He also said another season would need the right story and the right director, artist or studio to come together first. That’s an open door rather than a locked-in plan. It is a creative posture, not a greenlight, and it should be read as such until Netflix or CD Projekt Red makes a formal statement.
What’s next for the franchise
With “Edgerunners 2” now streaming, attention turns to whether CD Projekt Red and Netflix formalize a third installment. Because both seasons were announced as standalone projects with different casts, years apart, a Season 3 would likely follow that same anthology-style model if it happens. For now, the confirmed facts are the Oct. 20 premiere, the standalone format and the absence of any official renewal.
