Voice actor Hiroshi Tsuchida, best known as the Japanese voice of Grisha Yeager in “Attack on Titan,” died at 54, his talent agency 81 Produce announced Oct. 20. Tsuchida died Oct. 11 of heart failure, according to Crunchyroll. At the family’s request, only relatives attended his private funeral.

Agency confirms Hiroshi Tsuchida’s death

81 Produce shared the news on its official website, giving Oct. 11 as the date of death and heart failure as the cause, according to MyAnimeList. Tsuchida was born in Tokyo on Feb. 8, 1972. After finishing at Tokyo Metropolitan Bunkyo High School, he spent two years training with the Touhai theater company. An injury nearly pushed him to give up acting, but he signed with talent agency Big Apple instead, according to MyAnimeList.

His acting debut came in 1994, when he played Saizo, also known as Ninja Blue, in “Ninja Sentai Kakuranger.” By the late 1990s, voice acting and narration had become the core of his career.

A career across anime, games and dubbing

Tsuchida built a lengthy resume across anime, video games and Japanese dubbing. MyAnimeList lists his anime credits as including Daikichi Kawachi in “Usagi Drop” (“Bunny Drop”), Keigo Oonishi in “Texhnolyze,” John Titor in “Steins;Gate,” Raidou Namiashi in “Naruto” and Ganesha in “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”

Crunchyroll reported additional credits, including Dr. Platane in “Pokémon the Series: XY” in 2013, Connie in “Tropical-Rouge! Precure” in 2021, Nadim Samaya in “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury,” Machida in “Negative Positive Angler” in 2024 and Shūji Kataoka, also known as Kizuna Green, in “The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World” in 2025. Tokusatsu fans also heard him as HANE2 in “Ultraman Decker.”

In video games, Tsuchida voiced Feng Wei in the “Tekken” series and Kazuki in the “Yakuza” series. In Japanese dubs, he voiced actors including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scott Adkins, Mark Wahlberg, Owen Wilson and Matt Damon, according to Crunchyroll. For animation, he gave Lightning McQueen his Japanese voice across the “Cars” films and played Donatello in the 2012 “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series. He was also the Japanese voice of Kraglin in the live-action “Guardians of the Galaxy” films.

When he died, Tsuchida was partway through recording two roles: Timothy Britts in “Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation” Season 3 and Lionel in “The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom.”

Tributes from studios

Disney Studio Japan’s official animation account on X thanked Tsuchida for “breathing life into the genius racer McQueen in Japanese,” according to Anime News Network’s translation.

RGG Studio, the developer behind the “Yakuza” series, also posted on X. Using an alternate reading of his name, Dai Tsuchida, the studio noted his work as Kazuki and said everyone there would “sincerely pray for his eternal rest,” according to Insider Gaming’s translation. The official “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury” account also offered condolences, Anime News Network reported.

What’s next

As of Oct. 25, no public memorial had been announced following the private funeral. The teams behind “Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation” Season 3 and “The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom” also had not said how Tsuchida’s unfinished roles will be handled.
