Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video movies, series and originals.

Total Apex Take

Prime Video is betting its entire identity on sports rights and ads, and that bet is working financially even as its scripted slate gets quieter.

Amazon rolled ads into Prime Video by default in early 2024, charging extra for an ad-free tier, and has since built out a sports portfolio — Thursday Night Football, Kickoff games, and a share of the NBA's new media rights beginning with the 2025-26 season — that functions as Amazon's real subscriber-retention engine. On the scripted side, Fallout became a genuine hit and earned a quick renewal, The Boys is heading into its final season, and the James Bond franchise's creative control shifted to Amazon MGM in 2025, putting 007 inside the same ecosystem for the first time.

Our take: Amazon has correctly identified that live sports, not prestige drama, is what actually stops subscribers from churning, and it's reallocating accordingly — the ad-tier rollout only makes sense as a company optimizing for ad revenue and retention over being seen as a tastemaker the way HBO or FX still chase. That's a rational business move, but it does mean Prime Video's cultural cachet increasingly rides on a handful of hits like Fallout rather than a deep, consistent bench.

The thing to watch is how Amazon handles Bond's first Villeneuve-era film and whether it becomes a Prime Video exclusive or a traditional theatrical release — that choice will tell you how much Amazon actually values its new crown-jewel IP versus treating it as a subscriber-acquisition tool.

About Prime Video

Prime Video is Amazon's streaming service, bundled into Amazon Prime memberships alongside the company's shipping and shopping benefits. It launched in an earlier form as Amazon Unbox in 2006 before evolving into the Prime Video product offered today, and has expanded into live sports rights, including NFL Thursday Night Football, and major licensed franchises such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Amazon's 2022 acquisition of MGM brought the James Bond franchise's catalog and other MGM library titles under the same corporate umbrella as Prime Video, and Amazon MGM Studios took full creative control of future Bond films in 2025.
