The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies and shows, Middle-earth on screen.

Total Apex Take

A franchise now being made by three different companies at once — which is either a renaissance or a recipe for incoherence, depending on execution.

Amazon's “The Rings of Power” drew a mixed critical reception in its first seasons but has been renewed and refined, settling into a clearer identity once it stopped trying to replicate Peter Jackson's tone beat-for-beat and leaned into its own Second Age scale. Meanwhile Warner Bros. has “The Hunt for Gollum” in development with Andy Serkis directing and Jackson producing — a very different, film-side bet running in parallel.

Our take: the real risk isn't any single project's quality, it's rights fragmentation — Amazon, Warner Bros., and the Tolkien Estate all have overlapping but distinct interests, and franchises split across multiple corporate stewards (see also: Star Trek under multiple studios historically) tend to drift tonally unless someone is actively coordinating a shared vision.

If you only track one thread, track whether Rings of Power and the new films start referencing a shared, consistent timeline — that's the signal this is being treated as one coherent universe rather than two separate bets on the same name.

About The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is the film franchise adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, most famously through Peter Jackson's acclaimed early-2000s trilogy produced by New Line Cinema. The franchise later expanded with Jackson's Hobbit trilogy and, more recently, Amazon's television series The Rings of Power, which explores an earlier era of Middle-earth's history.

Jackson's original trilogy is widely regarded as a landmark achievement in fantasy filmmaking, known for its practical and digital effects work, New Zealand filming locations, and sweeping scale, culminating in The Return of the King's sweep of the Academy Awards.

Adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels by director Peter Jackson, the original trilogy (2001-2003) was filmed back-to-back in New Zealand, which has since marketed itself heavily around the production. The Return of the King (2003) won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, tying the record for most Oscar wins by a single film and becoming the only fantasy film to win Best Picture. Jackson later directed a second trilogy, The Hobbit (2012-2014), adapting Tolkien's earlier, shorter novel.
