On October 28th of 2026 we lost an incredible light. Sir Patrick Stewart departed this existence, and left a gap on the Stage, on Television, and in Hollywood. After a career spanning some 67 years, Sir Patrick Stewart amassed a plethora of incredible roles. This is a list of, in my opinion, his top 10 roles.

Number 10: Galileo Galilei in The Life of Galileo Galilei

Immediately after graduating courses at Bristol Old Vic Acting School, Sir Patrick Stewart would make his Acting Debut as Galileo Galilei in the stage show The Life of Galileo Galilei. I was unable to find images i could use of the play for this article, but there are some posted on the Bristol Old Vic website, contained within this article written about his passing. Now obviously, I have not seen this specific run of this play, but it felt remiss to leave the place where it all began off the list.

Number 9: Pharaoh Seti in The Prince of Egypt

The Prince of Egypt is a legendary animated film from DreamWorks productions with one hell of an ensemble cast. Sir Patrick Stewart lends his voice to Pharaoh Seti, Father of Rameses, for the first third of the movie. Seti does eventually pass, but during the section of the movie when he’s alive, Sir Patrick Stewart provides a Regal, Fatherly performance that is incredibly enjoyable.

Number 8: Gurney Halleck in Dune(1984)

It is no secret that there was a Dune adaptation in 1984, and although it was a Box Office Flop, Sir Patrick Stewart still gave a standout performance. Unfortunately for David Lynch’s doomed Dune adaptation, Universal very heavily interfered in the Editing process, forcing Lynch to cut nearly half of the planned 4 hours of content Lynch intended on including.

Through the jumpy mess of exposition and internal monologues however, Sir Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck becomes one of the best parts of the movie. Flipping from Disciplined Military Leader, to Pug-Wielding, Ferocious warrior in a matter of seconds, Sir Patrick Stewart brought every ounce of Shakespearean Gravitas he brought to every role, being the brightest spot in an otherwise troubled film. My Father showed me this film not long after i discovered Sir Patrick Stewart in one of the higher up entries on this list, and it remains close to my heart.

Number 7: King Goobot V in Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius

Call me an Unc if you want, but Sir Patrick Stewart as Yolkian King Goobot in the 2001 Nickelodeon Original Movie Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius was a fantastic casting. An early look into the more comedic side of Sir Patrick Stewart’s acting ability, he brought life, laughter, and slapstick humor to masses of 90’s kids in a way only he could. Stealing all of the Adults living in Retroville, Texas and attempting to sacrifice them to a Poultry themed deity named Poultra, King Goobot makes an excellent villain for a wacky child’s animated comedy film.

Number 6: Mace Sowell in Safe House

An aging former DIA agent, Alzheimers, a former Admiral running for President, and a friend who stages fake break ins are all things you find in the 1998 Thriller Safe House. Sir Patrick Stewart plays Mace Sowell, the said aging former DIA agent with Alzheimers sits on information that could alter the course of an upcoming Presidential Election. Admiral Thomas Michelmore, who is now running for President, is Sowell’s former boss and is aware of the dirt Sowell has on him. Unfortunately due to the slow decay of his mental faculties, and not telling anyone about his fomer career, Sowell is unable to convince anyone that he is being watched by Michelmore.

This film is the source of the meme “You ******* are gonna kill all of my Lillies” Which Sir Patrick Stewart shouts whilst firing a Glock at his garden bed which is full of Gopher Holes. This movie is fantastic if you like a good spy thriller, and Sir Patrick Stewart gives this role his everything.

Number 5: Macbeth in Macbeth

2010’s Macbeth is a reimagining of sorts of the Shakespeare original. With a 1960’s Soviet Romania Aesthetic, the Stage play is wonderfully adapted to the time period its set in. Drawing harsh parallels between the fictional Macbeth and the real Ceausescu, the final leader of the Romanian Communist Party, Sir Patrick Stewart brings his absolute A game in this role, playing off of Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth.

Number 4: Avery Bullock in American Dad

The Animated Sitcom American Dad follows CIA Agent Stan Smith and his Family. Sir Patrick Stewart plays Stan’s Eccentric, Authoritarian, Wisecracking Boss. From wild Romantic Entanglements Including Stan’s own Daughter, one hell of Substance Abuse issue, and Aggressive Physical Fitness, Sir Patrick Stewart really stretched his comedic chops in this recurring American Dad role. With American Dad still ongoing, Fox just ordered it through season 25 which will carry the show into 2029, hopefully Avery Bullock gets to exit stage left on a funny note, its what Sir Patrick Stewart would have wanted.

Number 3: Emperor Uriel Septim VII in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion

Another role where Sir Patrick Stewart’s character isn’t included in the majority of the production due to being removed from the Census, Emperor Uriel Septim VII is a close personal favorite of mine. In the Waning Years of the 3rd Era of Tamriel, you play a certain prisoner born to uncertain parents. After being locked in a cell in the Imperial City Prison you encounter the Emperor with his personal Bodyguards, the Blades.

Sir Patrick Stewart gives you some exposition as to the events that occurred immediately prior to the start of the game. His Son’s have been killed, and he is next. He has seen it in his dreams. You follow Septim through the sewers, breaking off from him for a while, until reconvening so he can give your character a Magical Amulet, tell you there is another son, and then get absolutely merc’d in front of you by an Assassin.

I played the breaks off of Morrowind, and when Oblivion came out i was right there, day one, realizing that both Sir Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean are in this game. I felt a bit sad when they killed off Uriel Septim, as i loved Sir Patrick Stewart’s voice. To this day i would still guard the Emperor with my life.

Number 2: Charles Xavier/Professor X in Various X-Men and Marvel Films

This wouldn’t be a true Sir Patrick Stewart top 10 list if i didn’t mention his second longest and second most recognizable role. In July of 2000 20th Century Studios would unknowingly set the expected casting for several of the Marvel Universes most important characters. Everybody expects Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Sir Ian McKellan as Magneto, and Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier. An incredibly high level Telepathic Mutant, Charles Xavier establishes the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, which exists to train young Mutants and push for peaceful coexistence with Humans. In a Genre Defying Movie, Sir Patrick Stewart gives a Masterclass performance as the Reserved Paraplegic Professor, acting as foil to the misguided Magneto.

His final time reprising this role is in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film.

The 2000 X-men film would also give us the worlds most Wholesome Bromance. Although they had met some decades before in the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, it wasn’t until they co-starred together in X-Men that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen would become incredibly close friends. My heart goes out to Sir Ian McKellen on the passing of such a close friend.

Number 1: Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and various Star Trek films and video games

If you didn’t expect Star Trek to be number one then you are clearly not familiar with Sir Patrick Stewart’s body of work. Jean-Luc Picard, the Wise and Diplomatic Captain of the USS Enterprise-D, its continuing mission, to boldly go where nobody has gone before.

Sir Patrick Stewart had already given everyone a glimpse of his Sci-Fi Acting abilities in Dune 1984, but in 1987, he would stand at the Helm of the Enterprise-D and quickly become a household name. From being put on trial by Q, to learning about Darmak and Jalad at Tanagra, Captain Jean-Luc Picard quickly became the favorite Star Trek Captain of every child forced to watch Star Trek with their parents through the 80’s and 90’s.

My Dad used to sit and watch reruns of TNG and even took me to see Star Trek Nemesis, despite the fact that i was a six year old boy and had zero clue of what was happening in the film. Some of my favorite memories with my Dad involve watching Jean-Luc Picard perform lowkey Space Wizardry and glide the USS Enterprise-D and her crew to safety nearly every episode. By the way, do you see 5 lights, or 4?

Sir Patrick Stewart’s Honorable Mentions

After a career spanning 67 years there are plenty of roles i could not include this list, but i did want to give a nod to. Sir Patrick Stewart had a recurring part as the inner monologue of Susie Swanson, Baby Daughter of Joe and Bonnie Swanson on Family Guy, He played Richard the First in Robinhood Men in Tights, He was Adventure in The Pagemaster, Mr. Woolensworth in Chicken Little, Lord Yupa in Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, Winters in TMNT, Darcy in Green Room, Poop in the Emoji Movie, and even narrated the American version of a British Docufiction about Dragons

. From myself, and i think from all of us left here on Earth in the wake of this passing, Fair Winds, Following Seas, and Godspeed Sir Patrick Stewart. You will not be forgotten. I’ll make it so.
