Marvel Comics has announced a new Jean Grey solo series, a five-issue limited run written by Jed MacKay with art by Rogê Antônio, according to Marvel. The first issue, “Jean Grey” #1, arrives Nov. 25 and finds the X-Men founder back on Earth after a run of intergalactic adventures tied to the conclusion of DNX.
The Jean Grey solo series picks up with Jean facing a sentient storm wielding elemental power, a threat that strikes the town of Merle, Alaska, according to Marvel. That storm has struck a compact with people seeking to harm mutants, setting up the central conflict of the new run.
Creative Team And Premise Of The Jean Grey Solo Series
MacKay, who scripts the series, said the project gave him a chance to sort through decades of characterization built around one of Marvel’s founding heroes.
“As one of the original five X-Men, she’s been there since the beginning, and there’s not only a rich history to explore, there’s also digging into how that history has shaped her in the present,” MacKay said, according to Marvel. “Jean’s been a lot of different things over the years, but [she] also means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, so I’ve been looking forward to winnowing down these disparate interpretations into who she is now.”
Antônio illustrates the series, which Marvel unveiled alongside a sneak peek of the lettered first issue.
What The Elemental Threat Means For Jean
MacKay described the storm Jean squares off against in issue one as a fitting match for a character of her stature.
“Given Jean’s power and her history, her foe in this series could be nothing less than elemental,” MacKay said, according to Marvel. “Jean is going to be going up [against] a primal force that threatens to return everything to a former age- and it’s going to take everything she has to fight it!”
The series also follows Jean as she re-evaluates her relationship with the Phoenix Force in the period after DNX, a thread MacKay is weaving into the broader story of who Jean Grey is now rather than who she has been in past eras of X-Men history.
Background: Jean Grey’s Recent Storylines
Jean Grey has long carried one of the most complicated power sets and histories in the X-Men line, built around her status as one of the five founding mutants and her repeated entanglements with the Phoenix Force. The new solo series follows directly from her time away from Earth during the DNX storyline, using her return as the jumping-off point for a fresh look at her powers and identity.
Marvel’s renewed focus on its founding X-Men lineup comes as the broader franchise draws fresh attention elsewhere, including the casting of Asa Germann as Angel in Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot and the recent report that Inde Navarrette turned down another role to join that project.
What’s Next
“Jean Grey” #1 goes on sale Nov. 25 as the opening chapter of the five-issue limited series. Marvel has not detailed the remaining issues beyond the confirmed count and the elemental threat introduced in the debut chapter.
Readers following Marvel‘s wider X-Men plans can also track developments on the live-action side, including Christopher Abbott’s comments on the Professor X role for the studio’s 2028 project.
