Prime Video has set a premiere date for Bloodaxe, the new historical drama from Vikings creator Michael Hirst. The streamer announced that all eight episodes of season one will arrive on Jan. 20, 2027, according to Polygon. The announcement came alongside the show’s first teaser trailer, which debuted Friday during a panel at New York Comic Con.

The Bloodaxe Prime Video series already has a second season in the works, with production currently underway in Ireland, Polygon reported.

What We Know About Bloodaxe

Bloodaxe is set in 10th-century Norway and follows the rise of Erik Bloodaxe, a Norse raider fighting to claim the Norwegian throne alongside his wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, according to Polygon. The story follows their quest amid rivalries, shifting alliances and betrayals, pulling in rulers from across Scandinavia and a powerful English king.

Xavier Molyneux plays Erik Bloodaxe, while Jessica Madsen plays Gunnhild. The cast also includes Levi Miller, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen, per Polygon.

Michael Hirst, who created Vikings, developed the series, with Horatio Hirst serving as co-showrunner.

Why It Matters

Bloodaxe draws from the same well of Norse history and legend that fueled Vikings, centering on political power struggles and violent clashes between rival factions. Hirst built a loyal audience with that earlier series, and Bloodaxe arrives as his next attempt to dramatize the Viking Age for Prime Video.

The second season renewal, confirmed before the first season has even premiered, points to the streamer’s early confidence in the project. Production on season two is already underway in Ireland, according to Polygon.

What’s Next

Bloodaxe premieres on Prime Video on Jan. 20, 2027, with all eight episodes available that day. No additional details on season two’s release timeline have been announced.
