James Bond

James Bond movies, the long-running 007 spy franchise from Eon Productions and MGM.

Total Apex Take

The franchise is at its biggest crossroads in 60 years — Amazon MGM now controls creative direction, and there's still no official next Bond.

Amazon MGM Studios taking creative control of the James Bond franchise, with longtime stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson stepping back from day-to-day decisions, is the single biggest shift in how this series has been made since Albert Broccoli founded Eon Productions in the early 1960s. For a franchise that's survived on exactly that kind of tight, family-controlled creative continuity across six different actors, this is uncharted territory.

No new Bond has been officially cast since Daniel Craig's run ended with “No Time to Die,” and the longer that gap stretches, the more speculation fills the vacuum — which is its own kind of franchise risk, since expectations tend to inflate the longer an announcement is delayed.

Our take: the casting decision matters less right now than the tonal one — whether Amazon pushes Bond toward more franchise-style interconnected storytelling (the modern blockbuster default) or respects the series' history of largely standalone adventures between eras. That choice will define the next decade of Bond more than who plays him.

About James Bond

James Bond is one of the longest-running film franchises in history, based on Ian Fleming's novels about British secret agent 007. Produced primarily by Eon Productions in partnership with MGM (now Amazon MGM Studios) since 1962, the series has featured multiple actors in the lead role across more than two dozen films, each bringing a distinct tone to the character.

Beyond its central spy-thriller formula, the Bond franchise is closely associated with its recurring gadgets, title sequences, theme songs, and a rotating cast of iconic villains, making it a defining influence on the modern action genre.

Eon Productions, founded by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, has produced the mainline Bond series since 1962's Dr. No, and the Broccoli family (through Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli) has controlled creative direction ever since. That changed in 2025, when Amazon MGM Studios struck a deal for full creative control of the franchise, reported at roughly $20 million, while the Broccolis retained a stake in future projects.
