Mission: Impossible

Mission: Impossible movies, Tom Cruise's long-running Paramount action franchise.

Total Apex Take

Tom Cruise closed out the Ethan Hunt saga on his own terms — the open question is whether the franchise has a future without him.

Splitting the finale into “Dead Reckoning” and “The Final Reckoning” was a gamble that didn't pay off as cleanly at the box office as Paramount hoped, partly due to release-date chaos and partly because audiences have gotten more resistant to two-part finales generally after a string of them across other franchises. Even so, the stunt work — Cruise doing his own aerial and underwater sequences well into his sixties — remains the single best argument for practical action filmmaking in a CG-saturated landscape.

Our take: this franchise's identity is inseparable from Cruise's specific, obsessive commitment to real stunts, which makes a recast or reboot a much harder sell than it would be for almost any other action series. A prequel or spin-off focused on the IMF as an organization is the more plausible path forward than a direct Ethan Hunt replacement.

If you're catching up, the series rewards watching in order more than most action franchises — the Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby subplots pay off specifically because of events several films earlier.

About Mission: Impossible

Mission: Impossible is Paramount Pictures' action-thriller franchise starring Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, based on the 1966–1973 television series of the same name. Since 1996, the film series has become known for its elaborate, often practically performed stunt sequences, which Cruise has personally headlined across each entry.

Each film typically brings in a different high-profile director, giving the series a degree of stylistic variety while maintaining its signature blend of espionage plotting and death-defying action set pieces.

Based on the 1966 television series created by Bruce Geller, the film franchise built its identity around elaborate practical stunts that star and producer Tom Cruise has performed himself, including a free climb, a HALO jump, and a motorcycle cliff jump in later installments. The series crossed $4 billion worldwide shortly after 2023's Dead Reckoning Part One.
