Sony Pictures is the frontrunner in talks to acquire the Battlefield movie package from Christopher McQuarrie and Michael B. Jordan after a multi-studio bidding war.

TheWrap reported that Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix all submitted bids for the Electronic Arts package before Sony emerged as the frontrunner. The project is based on EA’s long-running military shooter franchise, and the rights package has been on the market since spring, according to TheWrap.

The details of the Battlefield movie talks

McQuarrie is attached to write, direct and produce the adaptation. Jordan is onboard to produce and potentially star, though according to Variety his involvement as a lead is dependent on several factors.

McQuarrie is repped by CAA. Jordan is repped by 1v1 Entertainment, WME, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole and 2PM Sharp.

What it means for fans and the franchise

Battlefield launched in 2002 with the World War II-set Battlefield 1942 and has since spanned historical conflicts, alternate history and futuristic warfare across PC, Mac and consoles. Battlefield 6, the 18th entry in the series, released last year and became the bestselling first-person shooter of the year and in franchise history, according to Variety. In 2025, Battlefield 6 outsold Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in the U.S. for the first time, according to TheWrap.

That commercial success gave EA the momentum to assemble McQuarrie and Jordan into a package for buyers when the rights hit the market in spring.

Context: a crowded video game movie landscape

The Battlefield talks arrive as studios chase the box office success of video game adaptations. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie from Illumination, Nintendo and Universal has grossed $764 million worldwide and stands as the biggest movie of 2026 so far, according to TheWrap. Paramount is separately developing a Call of Duty movie with Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg writing and Berg directing, setting up a potential rivalry between the two shooter franchises on screen.

McQuarrie recently finished Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which wrapped up Tom Cruise’s run as Ethan Hunt. He is also set to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger in King Conan and is working with Cruise on an upcoming space film directed by Doug Liman.

Jordan has prior video game adaptation experience.
