Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

MGM movies and franchises, from James Bond to the historic studio's classic film library.

Total Apex Take

Amazon didn't buy MGM for the lion logo, it bought it for James Bond, and in 2025 it finally cashed that check.

Amazon's $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM closed in 2022 ostensibly for the library and the Bond half-stake, but for years Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson kept creative control of 007 walled off from Amazon's involvement. That changed in 2025, when Amazon MGM took over creative control of the Bond franchise, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman stepping in as producers and Denis Villeneuve announced to direct the next installment — the first time in the character's history that the Broccoli family isn't steering the films directly.

Our take: this is the single biggest shift in Bond's 60-plus-year history, bigger than any recasting, and the early signs — Pascal's taste and Villeneuve's pedigree — are more reassuring than a cynic would've predicted from a tech company taking the keys. But Amazon's MGM output elsewhere (Road House's 2024 remake, Rocky-adjacent Creed extensions) has leaned toward safe, algorithm-friendly swings rather than auteur risk, so Bond is the real proof of whether Amazon treats this as a prestige asset or a streaming-engagement machine.

Watch casting news for the next 007 as the real signal: a choice driven by Villeneuve and Pascal's creative instincts versus one clearly engineered for Prime Video engagement metrics will tell you which version of Amazon MGM is actually running this franchise.

About Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, better known as MGM, is one of Hollywood's founding studios, formed in 1924 and famous for its roaring-lion logo. After decades as an independent film powerhouse and several changes of ownership, MGM was acquired by Amazon in 2022, bringing its deep library and active franchises, most notably the James Bond series, under Amazon's media umbrella.

While MGM no longer operates as a fully independent studio, its brand continues on new theatrical and streaming releases, and its historic film catalog is a major content asset for Amazon's Prime Video service.
