Street Fighter Box Office Opening Projections

Street Fighter projects $25, $35 million domestic opening. A24's Elizabeth Holmes doc aims for $8 million from 800 theaters in a crowded four-film weekend.

Street Fighter Box Office Opening Projections

Paramount’s “Street Fighter” reboot is projected to earn between $25 million and $35 million in its domestic opening weekend, leading a crowded slate of four new wide releases, according to Variety. The video game adaptation opens in 3,500 North American theaters, while A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” aims for a smaller but notable $7 million to $8 million start from 800 locations.

The contrast between the two releases highlights two different box office bets this weekend: a big-budget franchise swing versus a documentary that exhibitors believe could become a rare theatrical breakout.

Street Fighter Box Office Projections And Budget

“Street Fighter” carries an $82 million budget, co-financed by Legendary and video game developer Capcom, with Paramount handling distribution only, Variety reported. The PG-13 action-adventure film has the biggest budget among this weekend’s four new releases.

Beyond North America, “Street Fighter” is projected to add roughly $35 million from 65 international markets, according to the outlet. Directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, the film is set in 1993 and follows two estranged fighters recruited into a tournament.

The franchise has a mixed box office history. The 1994 live-action “Street Fighter” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme earned $100 million and was considered a hit for its era. The 2009 follow-up, “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,” earned just $12.8 million against a $50 million budget for 20th Century, a steep underperformance that makes this weekend’s projections a key test for the franchise’s revival.

You Can See Everything Aims For Rare Documentary Opening

“You Can See Everything,” described by Variety as much-hyped, cost around $7 million to produce and is projected to earn $7 million to $8 million in its opening from 800 locations. Exhibitors believe the Elizabeth Holmes documentary could become a rare breakout in a genre that typically struggles at the box office.

That optimism follows a recent comparison point. Amazon MGM’s “Melania,” a $40 million documentary about first lady Melania Trump, opened to $7.1 million from 1,778 theaters, the biggest opening for a non-music or concert documentary in more than a decade, according to Variety. If “You Can See Everything” hits the high end of its range from fewer than half as many theaters, it would mark a notably efficient per-location performance for the format.

Whalefall Rounds Out A Crowded Weekend

Disney’s survival thriller “Whalefall” is projected to earn between $10 million and $12 million from 3,065 venues, Variety reported. The film, directed by Brian Duffield, follows a scuba diver swallowed by a sperm whale with one hour of oxygen to escape. It carries a $60 million production budget, putting its break-even bar well above its opening weekend projection alone.

What’s Next

Actual opening weekend grosses for “Street Fighter,” “You Can See Everything” and “Whalefall” will be reported once theaters close out ticket sales, with studios typically issuing Friday estimates followed by final weekend figures. Those numbers will determine whether the “Street Fighter” franchise has found its footing again and whether “You Can See Everything” achieves the breakout documentary run exhibitors are watching for.
