Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, a new Netflix documentary directed by Judd Apatow, launched on the streamer Oct. 16. The film traces the comedian’s rise through stand-up and television, his turbulent run on Saturday Night Live, and the personal contradictions that shaped how he lived and worked, built from archival footage, personal photos and rare home videos supplied by fans and friends, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Macdonald died in 2021, according to The Associated Press. The documentary nonetheless uses his own voice as narrator, stitched together from his book, his sketches, his stand-up and old interviews.
Apatow’s Approach To The Norm Macdonald Documentary
Apatow said the goal was to let the comedian speak for himself rather than filter his story through talking-head commentary. “The idea was to let Norm tell you who he was by what he left behind. We just thought, taking his book and his sketches and stand up and the interviews, we can make this collage to show what he was really like,” Apatow said, according to Netflix.
That structural choice, assembling a posthumous narration from existing material, sets the project apart from a standard biographical documentary. It lets Macdonald control his own narrative even though the film was made years after his death.
Early Career And Rise To Weekend Update
Macdonald’s first appearance on network television came May 9, 1990, on Late Night with David Letterman, according to Variety. He went on to anchor Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live starting in 1993, holding the desk for four seasons.
The Weekend Update run built Macdonald’s reputation for a flat, deadpan delivery that became his signature. It also set up the conflict that would end his time on the show.
The SNL Firing And The O.J. Simpson Jokes
Macdonald was fired from Saturday Night Live for repeatedly making jokes about O.J. Simpson murdering his wife, Variety reported. The person who fired him, Don Ohlmeyer, the president of NBC’s West Coast division, was O.J. Simpson’s best friend, according to the outlet.
That detail gives the firing a personal dimension beyond a simple editorial dispute over material. Variety’s review of the documentary describes the film charting Macdonald’s difficult personality and his bent toward self-sabotage, while still paying homage to what the outlet called his “prickly comic glee.”
A Comedian Known For Blurring Fact And Fiction
Variety reported that Macdonald was a compulsive liar both in his stand-up act and in his personal life, with the two frequently intertwined. That blurring of performance and reality runs through the documentary’s account of his career, complicating any simple retelling of what actually happened versus what Macdonald claimed happened.
The film arrives as part of a larger slate of comedy documentaries Netflix is releasing this fall under its Netflix Is a Joke banner, according to the streamer.
