Steven Soderbergh is directing the remaining portion of The Batman Part II, stepping in after production paused earlier in October 2026, according to Polygon and IGN. Matt Reeves, the sequel’s original director, remains involved and is expected to finish the film once his footage is complete.

The production had been underway in London before the pause, which came so Reeves could attend to a family matter. DC Studios confirmed the pause and expressed support for Reeves.

What Happened With The Batman Part II Production

Soderbergh approached Reeves to volunteer his help after expressing admiration for Reeves’ work on 2022’s The Batman, according to IGN. Soderbergh is known for directing films including Ocean’s Eleven and Traffic.

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

Reeves addressed the arrangement directly in his own statement. “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” Reeves said. “I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”

What It Means For The Sequel’s Timeline

Soderbergh is expected to direct only the final weeks of principal photography, according to IGN, with Reeves returning to complete the film from there. The Batman Part II remains scheduled for theatrical release on Feb. 18, 2028, a date the sequel has reached after being pushed back several times previously.

The arrangement keeps Reeves attached to the project as its director while allowing filming to continue during his absence. The arrangement keeps Reeves’ vision intact while allowing filming to continue.

What’s Next

Neither source reported an exact date for when filming will resume. DC Studios has not announced whether the pause will affect the Feb. 18, 2028 release date.
