The Barbershop teaser from Prime Video introduces Jermaine Fowler as the new face of Calvin’s, the Chicago shop at the heart of the film franchise. The streamer revealed the first look at CultureCon on Saturday, TVLine reported.
What the Barbershop teaser shows
In the Barbershop teaser, Fowler plays Trav, a young man who comes home to Chicago hoping to honor his grandfather’s legacy at the shop. First, though, he has to win over a new crew of barbers and customers in a neighborhood that has changed.
The Barbershop teaser promises the same spirit as the films. Calvin’s is still the place where a haircut comes with strong opinions, loud debates and plenty of community.
Barbershop release date, cast and creators

The cast includes Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye and Langston Kerman. Guest stars include Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim, Diallo Riddle, Ziwe, Tituss Burgess, Comedian CP, Devon Walker and Belmont Cameli.
Amazon MGM Studios produces with Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat, Busy B Entertainment, Prominent Productions and State Street Pictures. Oz Rodriguez directs and executive produces. Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the original 2002 film, and Max Searle are co-showrunners.
How the show connects to the Barbershop films
The franchise began in 2002 with Ice Cube as Calvin, the shop’s owner. Two sequels followed: Barbershop 2: Back in Business in 2004 and Barbershop: The Next Cut in 2016. The 2005 spinoff Beauty Shop starred Queen Latifah.
This is not the first TV version. Showtime aired a Barbershop series in 2005 with Omar Gooding as Calvin, and it ran one season. The Prime Video show instead hands the shop to a new generation while keeping Calvin’s as a community hub.
More Black-led comedy on streaming
Comedy built around Black casts and stories keeps growing. Netflix recently renewed A Different World for Season 2, and HBO is developing a boxing comedy through the Issa Rae HBO pilot.
