Netflix renews ‘A Different World’ for Season 2

Netflix’s A Different World

Netflix has renewed A Different World for Season 2, just eight days after the sequel series premiered on Sept. 24. The swift turnaround makes it one of the streamer’s fastest renewals of the year and confirms the show’s return to Hillman College for another chapter.

The series, a continuation of the 1980s-90s NBC sitcom, follows Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon) as she attends Hillman, a historically Black college, where her parents Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne (Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison in the original) once studied.

What Netflix announced about A Different World Season 2

Season 2 will follow Deborah and her Hillman classmates into their sophomore year. Creator and showrunner Felicia Pride said in a statement that the renewal validates the show’s reception from fans.

“It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience. We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations,” Pride said in a statement. “I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hard-working crew.”

Director and executive producer Debbie Allen added, “Halleluja! The people and Netflix have spoken. A Different World brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and heart.”

Tracey Pakosta, vice president of comedy series at Netflix, said, “We are so excited to see how audiences around the world have embraced the next chapter of this beloved series. We believed in this incredible team from day one, and can’t wait to see what unfolds next year at Hillman College.”

What it means for fans of the Hillman College revival

The renewal came after strong viewership. According to the Hollywood Reporter, A Different World accumulated more than 4.2 million views and 23 million hours of watch time globally in its opening four days, per Netflix’s internal numbers. The show debuted at No. 4 on the Global Top 10 English TV list and reached the Top 10 in 15 countries.

Creative team staying in place

Pride executive produces the series alongside Allen, Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Mandy Summers. Pride told the outlet she grew up watching the original series and set out to “capture and imbue the spirit” of it in the new version.

“The feeling that it gave you, which for me, was warmth,” Pride said. “The feeling of having this community of students and friends and mentors and elders, also the texture and the culture of HBCUs, and then the political consciousness of the show. Those were the sides of the square.”

What’s next

Netflix has not announced a premiere date, episode count or production start for Season 2. The streamer confirmed only that the show will return with Deborah and her classmates entering their sophomore year at Hillman.
