Director Michael Mann, 83, accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range Oct. 31 and was treated at a hospital for what his representative called a superficial injury.
TMZ first reported the accident Nov. 1. Police determined the shooting was accidental, and a source close to the filmmaker told Deadline it will not affect the start of production on “Heat 2,” which Mann is scheduled to direct in January.
What happened at the gun range
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a shots-fired call around 4 p.m. at The Range LA, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The members-only shooting club is on Missouri Avenue in West Los Angeles.
“Responding units’ investigation determined the shooting to be accidental. The subject was transported to a local hospital in stable condition,” the LAPD said. The department also told ABC News an injury report was completed.
Mann was holstering a .45-caliber handgun when it fired and struck him in the left thigh, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Range staff offered medical aid before paramedics took him to the hospital, those sources said.
A representative for Mann gave several outlets the same statement. “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” it said.
Sources told TMZ that Mann has been an experienced target shooter for decades and that his injury was subcutaneous and minor.
Mann seen on crutches
Mann was photographed in Los Angeles on Nov. 3, three days after the accident. Images published by the Daily Mail showed him on crutches leaving what appeared to be an orthopedic surgery clinic, with his left foot in a cast and a black orthopedic boot, Parade reported.
What it means for ‘Heat 2’
Mann built his career on precision and research, directing films such as “Heat,” “Thief,” “Manhunter,” “Collateral,” “The Insider” and 2023’s “Ferrari.” His movies are known for technically accurate depictions of weapons and tactics.
“Heat 2,” the sequel to his 1995 crime drama, is based on the 2022 novel Mann wrote with Meg Gardiner and is set up at Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists. Deadline’s January start date is the latest timeline for a project that has slipped several times.
Mann’s crime legacy is also back on screen in another form. Joseph Kosinski is directing “Miami Vice ’85,” starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, with Walton Goggins reportedly playing a henchman. Mann was an executive producer of the original NBC series and directed the 2006 film. Universal has set the new movie for May 19, 2028.
What remains unclear
Several details have not been reported, including why the gun fired, which hospital treated Mann and when he left. It also isn’t clear how the cast seen in the Nov. 3 images relates to the injury his representative called superficial. No charges have been reported.
