Overwatch Season 5 Hero Guide: Asserting the MEKA Power

D.Va in Pilot Form in Overwatch

The Overwatch roster is starting to settle. It is time to revisit the rest of the hero roster. First up is D.Va. She is one of the more beloved heroes in Overwatch. She has long been one of the game’s best tanks. Her role shifted when the game moved from 6v6 to 5v5. She is one of the best tanks to learn if you want to get into the role.

Eject! – Eject out of your mech when it is destroyed.

She leaves her mech when it loses all its HP. You can still fight as pilot D.Va. Pilot D.Va is stronger than most realise. Look to finish off kills or spam angles to return to your mech.

Fusion Cannons – Automatic short-range spread weapons.

Her primary fire has unlimited ammo. In most cases, you can fire at enemies. The only drawback is that firing reduces your movement speed. If you are hunting down a target, wait until you get close to use Fusion Cannons. You can fire Fusion Cannons while using Boosters and Micro Missiles. However, Defense Matrix locks you out.

Light Gun – Automatic weapon.

Her weapon as Pilot D.Va. It is mainly effective at short-to-mid ranges. However, spamming it down long corridors can help to recover your mech.

Defense Matrix – Blocks projectiles in front of you.

One of Her best abilities. Defense Matrix denies any weapon or ability labeled as a projectile. That makes her one of the best and most frustrating tanks to play against. She can deny an ultimate with one perfectly timed Defensive Matrix. It does have an energy bar. That means you must be conscious of how you use it. Identify the threats that you want to neutralize. Keep Defensive Matrix for that. You can cast Defense Matrix while using Boosters and Micro Missiles.

Boosters – Fly in the direction you are facing.

Boosters are her mobility tool. They can get her across the map quickly. The cooldown is relatively low, allowing you to move back and forth. Putting the ability on cooldown as often as possible should be your go-to. However, do not spam it. Always have an intent. You are looking to close the gap on an enemy, run away, help your teammate, or deny a position. A mistake can easily lead to your or your teammate’s death. Using Boosters activates Initiator subrole healing.

Micro Missiles – Launch a volley of explosive rockets.

Her best form of burst damage. At close range, Micro Missiles will tear through almost every hero. Use them if you are close to an opponent. You can cast Micro Missiles while using any of D.Va’s basic abilities and Fusion Cannons.

Self-Destruct – Eject and overload your mech, causing it to explode after a short time.

Self-Destruct is her ultimate ability. In the original Overwatch days, Self-Destruct was used more to win fights. Since moving to solo-tank, Self-Destruct is better as a second life. Most of the time, you want to play aggressively with the ultimate available. After losing your mech, cast your ultimate. It clears the area and allows you to remech

Call Mech – Call down a new mech.

Pilot D.Va’s ultimate ability. Casting Call Mech returns you to your mech. The ability becomes available instantly after D.Va’s mech explodes from Self-Destruct. If ejected from your mech, you must build up the ultimate. Calling down the mech deals damage in a small area.

Asserting Your Power – D.Va Tips

Playing Whack a Mole

D.Va can be almost everywhere. You can move around the map freely with her four-second Boosters cooldown. Your job is to identify the threats. It is easier said than done. Knowing which opponent is the bigger threat takes time to get used to. Some ultimates can sway how dangerous a threat is. A Soldier: 76 on a flank becomes significantly stronger with Tactical Visor. You can not neutralize every threat in the game. Identify what you can and can not deal with.

Not Overchasing

While eliminating an enemy removes the threat completely, it is not always possible. Be happy with forcing someone away from an area. They will not be in the fight for a few seconds. Investing too much time in one opponent can leave your team vulnerable. Other times, some enemies will be too far away to reach with Boosters. If you have to use all of your Defense Matrix, Boosters, and Health to reach a target, it is rarely worth it.
