Worlds 2026 Gen.G Esports Preview: Another Shot at Winning the Crowning Jewel
The countdown to Worlds 2026 has begun. To start the hype for the international event, we are looking at every team in the tournament. First up is the LCK Champions, Gen.G Esports. They started the year well by winning the LCK Cup. However, their downfall began after losing to G2 Esports at First Stand. They finally recovered at the end of the year to win the LCK.
Gen.G Esports Roster
- Kim “Kiin” Ki-in – Korean Top Laner
- Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu – Korean Jungler
- Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon – Korean Mid Laner
- Park “Ruler” Jaek-hyuk – Korean Bot Laner
- Joo “Duro” Min-kyu – Korean Support
They kept the same roster for 2026. Canyon almost did not re-sign. However, they locked down the former Worlds winner.
A Disappointing Year
For most teams, winning the LCK Cup and the LCK Championship would be a successful year. But for Gen.G, that is not the case. They came into the First Stand as the clear favorites. The loss to G2 Esports not only eliminated them from First Stand, but it also impacted their year. They took a long time to recover. A 14-4 record in Rounds 1-2 was worse than expected. They could not defend their back-to-back MSI titles after losing to T1 in the Road to MSI.
EWC was not any better. They lost to Dplus KIA in the semi-finals. A 0-2 homestand spelt trouble; however, that turned their year around. The roster took on the onus to return to form. For the rest of LCK, they were the best team. Two dominant series victories over Hanwha Life Esports earned them the LCK title.
Their struggles during the year could be a good omen for their run. They usually dominate every competition. A series loss in the LCK is a rarity for these titans. However, they lost more than before. Perhaps it helps them fix their mistakes going into Worlds.
Key Player – Kim “Kiin” Ki-in
Stability Personified
Kiin’s weak performance impacted Gen.G midway through the year. Even in his struggles, Kiin remained one of the world’s best top laners. His resurgence, along with Ruler, helped the LCK champions return to the top. Kiin is not as flashy as top laners like Zeus and Bin. He can absolutely take over games, but in his own way. At his peak, few can defeat Kiin in lane. He is almost always relevant.
One reason they beat Hanwha Life Esports twice in the playoffs is Kiin. He did his best to keep Zeus quiet, a task that many have failed at. The HLE top laner still had an impact, but Kiin made him fight for it. Kiin will be pivotal at Worlds. Hanwha Life Esports and Bilibili Gaming will be two of their biggest threats. Kiin will need to stand up to Zeus and Bin. It is likely Kiin’s final Worlds appearance before he leaves for mandatory military service.
Gen.G’s Expectations
If Gen.G is at an international event, they are at the top of everyone’s tier lists. 2026 is no different. They join Hanwha Life Esports and Bilibili Gaming as the favorites. T1 should never be doubted, considering they always level up at Worlds. Anything short of victory for Chovy and Gen.G is a disappointment. The LoL Esports community puts heavy weight on Worlds. Is it finally the time Chovy gets his fated title?
Swiss Stage Beginnings
They will start in the Swiss Stage. Winning the LCK grants them the first seed. They will be in Pool 1 for the Round 1 draw. They will face teams from Pool 4.
Potential Opponents
CTBC Flying Oyster, Invictus Gaming, and the Play-Ins winner. They can not face Dplus KIA. Teams can not play opponents from their region in Round 1.
