The Guardians Make Their Own Fate: Destiny 2 Returns
After weeks of vague posting, hope started to build again. Destiny 2 news was coming. The Sunrise and Dawn projects were gaining momentum. They had brought back most of the vaulted Destiny 2 content. That work, along with the community’s fight, has made an impact. All the vaulted Destiny 2 content pre-Beyond Light is coming back. Bungie has announced the return of all the pre-Beyond Light content, with more planned in the future.
Destiny 2 Returns
After Bungie announced the End of Service a few months ago, the Destiny community mourned. To show Bungie and Sony that they made the wrong choice, the community took the fight. They showed in droves, in-game, on social media, and in various game showcases. The message, “We Want Destiny 3”, took over Sony’s State of Play shows. As time progressed, some gave up the fight. However, many stayed on to keep the light going.
And it has finally paid off. Bungie announced yesterday that they are unvaulting the pre-Beyond Light content for Destiny 2. The exact length of the unvaulting is unknown, but it is a significant step. Everyone has been asking for the unvaulting to happen since the start of Beyond Light.
That is not the only announcement for Destiny 2. The end of service is not quite the end of service anymore. Bungie is continuing development for Destiny 2 and the universe. The timeline for new content and the unvaulting is unknown.
What is Being Unvaulted?
Many never got to experience Destiny 2’s early days. Now they will get that chance. Plenty of content is likely returning:
- Campaigns
- Red War
- Curse of Osiris
- Warmind
- Forsaken (vaulted with the Witch Queen release)
- Destinations
- IO
- Mars
- Mercury
- Titan
- The Tangled Shore
- Raids
- Crown of Sorrow
- Eater of Worlds
- Leviathan
- Scourge of the Past
- Spire of Stars
There could be more content. Elements like the Menagerie and Black Armory could return. However, they were seasonal content. Players want them to return, but seasonal content usually stays away for good. Regardless, new and old players will get to experience what made Destiny, Destiny. The old raids, destinations, and campaigns that were lost to time.
Why Unvaulting Matters
The community’s faith in Bungie is at rock bottom. The developers delivered an excellent Monument of Triumph update. However, it did not move the needle on how everyone felt about the company. Everyone questioned whether Sony and Bungie knew what their community wanted. Unvaulting is a step in the right direction. At the very least, it buys them time to figure out what is next for the Destiny universe. It bridges the gap. While many have experienced it before, others will get to see it for the first time. You can now take your friends through the old raids in their entirety and show them why Forsaken was so beloved.
We as the Destiny community have earned a massive W. The fight is not over yet; we need to keep proving to Bungie and Sony that returning to Destiny is the right choice. And who knows, maybe this decision will make an everlasting impact on the gaming community. Destiny showed that our opinions matter; hopefully, more games and communities will follow in its footsteps.
Marathon Not Left Out to Dry
Bungie is not abandoning Marathon. The extraction shooter is here to stay. They plan on adding more and better experiences for both PvE and PvP players. Bungie does not want to prioritise one aspect of the game. At least, that is how they are phrasing it. If Bungie can restore faith in Destiny, perhaps we will see growth in Marathon as well.
The Future
The future is bright, at least for Bungie’s plans. However, Bungie must deliver. Words are not enough. They have already emphasised that. Bungie must deliver to return to where it once was. We will hold our breath until the fateful unvaulting day arrives.
