Overwatch Season 5 Hero Guide: Mastering Doomfist
The Overwatch roster is starting to settle. It is time to revisit the rest of the hero roster. Doomfist is one of the hardest heroes to learn in Overwatch. It is rare to find Doomfist players who have not invested hours into the character. We do not recommend playing Doomfist unless you are willing to invest the time. If the time commitment does not scare you, we have a guide to get you started.
Doomfist Kit Breakdown and Tips

The Best Defense – Dealing damage with abilities creates temporary overhealth.
The Best Defense is his passive. It makes landing abilities on your engages vital. Your survival chances increase with overhealth. That does not mean you should always aim for a group of enemies.
Hand Cannon – Short-range weapon with spread. Reloads automatically.
Only effective at close range. Use it for chip damage before you engage. Aim closer to the target’s neck. Most of the pellets should hit the target’s head, increasing your damage. Always look to follow up a punch with shots from the Hand Cannon.
Rocket Punch – Hold to charge, then release to launch forward and knock an enemy back. Damage increases if the enemy hits a wall.
Doomfist’s main form of engagement and mobility. A fully charged Rocket Punch can set up a kill on a squishy target. However, a tap punch is sometimes better for overhealth and knockback. Try knocking enemies into walls. There are also plenty of techs that you should learn with his punch.
Seismic Slam – Leap Forward and Smash the Ground
Seismic Slam is an excellent mobility tool and engage. The Slam itself does not deal significant damage. However, landing it will grant the overshield. You can gain height with the Slam while looking vertically. You can also combo Rocket Punch and Seismic Slam for increased mobility.
Power Block – Protect yourself from frontal attacks. Blocking heavy damage empowers Rocket Punch.
Always follow an engage with Power Block. The damage reduction and potential second Rocket Punch add significant value. The Empowered Punch deals more damage. Use it to either re-engage or disengage. On defense, you can use Power Block to gain the Empowered Punch first.
Meteor Strike – Press ultimate to leap up into the air. Move the targeting circle, then press primary fire to strike the targeted area.
Meteor Strike gives you an additional escape. Use all of your cooldowns on an engage. Follow with Meteor Strike to disengage. You can either disengage fully or wait out the duration and re-engage on a target. During the ultimate duration, Doomfist heals and gains Empowered Punch.

Mastering Doomfist

Cooldown Management
In most situations, you want to have all cooldowns available. Engaging without one leaves you vulnerable and decreases your threat. You also want to space out the cooldown usage. Give your other cooldowns time to reset. Unless you land the perfect engage, you will need to disengage as well. Depending on the situation, use a movement cooldown to disengage.
Tracking Opponent Cooldowns
One of the best assets is knowing what opponents can do to counter you. Ana’s Sleep Dart is a threat for Doomfist. You need the Power Matrix perk to negate Sleep Dart. Be mindful of this. Try to outsmart Ana or other characters with CC, like Cassidy. Be ready to disengage quickly. Their cooldowns are longer than yours. That gives you a window to re-engage.
Learning the Techs
Doomfist has more Techs than any other hero in Overwatch. Most of them are niche. Techs like Turn Punching, cancelling Rocket Punch with Seismic Slam, Bounces, and Diagonals will help you. Use them to surprise opponents. The Rocket Punch into Seismic Slam out of spawn covers significant ground. Some teams may not be ready for your return. Bounces also help you gain height and reach places you could not without investing two cooldowns.
