It’s Thursday and time for your daily devotional. Psalm 128 is a Song of Degress sung by pilgrims on their way to worship God. It celebrates God’s blessings on the righteous in their families, homes, and communities. In today’s daily devotional, celebrate the God you serve by honoring Him for all the blessings He’s bestowed upon your life.
Blessed of the Lord
From the beginning, this psalm bursts with exuberant praise for God’s blessings. This song uses the words “blessed” and “happy” interchangeably for God’s people: “Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.” Going up to Jerusalem, the pilgrims know that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” The Bible calls wisdom the “principal thing,”and it’s a blessing from God.
Those who honor God and delight in His ways, regardless of class, economic status, or nationality, are blessed. In your daily devotional, imagine the great joy the pilgrims felt singing this song as people blessed of the Lord. Today, it’s your song to sing.
All is Well
Verse 2 proclaims, “For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.” When you’re blessed, your labor isn’t wasted or stolen away. You can enjoy the work of your hands, reaped from God’s goodness. For He blesses your seed and gives you an abundant harvest. You’re “happy” or blessed, and He who keeps you safe will make things well with you.
When the Shunammite woman was blessed with a son, he later died. Then she sought Elisha, who foretold she’d embrace a son. When Gehazi asked about her family, she replied, “It is well.” Even after her son’s death, she knew God could restore life. In this daily devotional, you’re in a covenant relationship with God; hold on to His promises that all is well.
An Enriched Life
The pilgrims sang of God’s blessings upon their home and family: “Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.” Grapevines and olive trees produced abundant crops in Israel; they weren’t essential to life but made it sweeter. Having a good marriage and thriving children may not be necessary for survival, but they greatly enrich one’s life.
Verse 4 is a repetition of verse 1 because its a surety: “Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.” God’s people can walk in confidence knowing they are blessed of God, for they fear and honor Him. In this daily devotional, see yourself as blessed. It’s not a selfish desire; it’s God promise to those who walk upright.
Strong Households
The latter part of verse 5 says, “And thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.” Jerusalem, or Zion, is where God placed His temple, where the prophets spoke, and where Jesus taught. It was the nation’s center of worship. God brought strong, happy families into this city, for its good, establishing an even stronger foundation. In your daily devotional, when your home is built on the fear of the Lord, it will remain strong.
When You Honor God’s House, He Honors Yours
In Thursday’s daily devotional, pilgrims traveled in families, and on this spiritual journey, it was a blessing to have children’s children singing in praise to the Lord. Those who fear God enjoy peace in their homes and families. As they honored God’s house in Jerusalem, He honored theirs by adding blessings to their lives.
