Hulu originals, movies and next-day TV.

Total Apex Take

Hulu as an independent brand is being quietly dissolved into Disney+, and the FX-prestige library that made it distinctive is the main reason anyone should still care.

Disney completed its full buyout of Comcast's remaining Hulu stake in early 2024 for roughly $8.6 billion, and has since moved aggressively to fold Hulu's content into the Disney+ app as a licensed tab in the U.S. rather than keeping it as a separate destination — a technical and strategic merger that's been rolling out through 2025. What's kept Hulu relevant creatively through this transition is its FX pipeline: The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, and Shogun all live there, giving it a prestige identity Disney+ otherwise lacks.

Our take is that Disney is sacrificing the Hulu brand for bundling efficiency, and that's the correct business move even though it's a little sad for anyone who remembers Hulu as the scrappier, more adult-skewing alternative to Disney+. The real tell is that Disney didn't buy Hulu to preserve it as a separate product — it bought it to stop paying Comcast and to get FX and general-entertainment content under one roof it fully controls.

Watch for whether the Hulu name survives as anything more than a content tab inside Disney+ over the next year or two — the direction of travel strongly suggests Disney eventually retires it as a standalone brand entirely.

About Hulu

Hulu launched in 2008 as a joint venture between NBCUniversal and News Corp (later joined by Disney and WarnerMedia), built around next-day access to network television episodes. Disney gradually consolidated ownership through its 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox's stake and a 2023 deal for Comcast/NBCUniversal's remaining share, making Hulu fully Disney-owned.

Hulu has since positioned itself as Disney's general-entertainment and mature-audience streaming brand in the U.S., complementing the family-oriented Disney+ service, and its content has increasingly been folded into the Disney+ app for subscribers to both services.
