Jamie Foxx: Kevin Hart roast made me cut Hulu special

Jamie Foxx tells The Hollywood Reporter the Kevin Hart roast fallout made him rework his new stand-up special, Take Care of Yourself, out Oct. 7 on Hulu.

Jamie Foxx says the fallout from Kevin Hart’s controversial roast pushed him to rethink material in his new Hulu stand-up special, Take Care of Yourself. The special arrives on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

“After that Kevin Hart roast, I had to cut everything,” Foxx told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m so thankful to be working. I think you’re going to love Fight for ’84, but I just want to continue to do stuff that you like.”

Foxx did not detail exactly which jokes he removed, but he made clear the backlash to Hart’s roast weighed on him as he finalized the special. The comment came as he discussed his comedian peers and who might call him out over his past celebrity impressions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I was talking to an actress that I really admire, and I said, ‘I want you to see the next stuff that I’m doing and go, “wow,”‘ and that’s all you can hope for,” Foxx said.

What’s confirmed about Take Care of Yourself

Take Care of Yourself is Foxx’s follow-up to his 2024 Netflix special What Had Happened Was…, which he taped a year after suffering a brain bleed that led to a stroke, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new special builds on his recovery but leans into more jokes aimed at himself and other celebrities in his age range, including Kim Kardashian and Donald Trump, per the outlet.

Foxx, 58, addressed critics who said his last special wasn’t funny enough. “When you almost died, you’re not going to be like, ‘knock knock, who’s there,'” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “You got to get into it.

So that’s another part of this. I feel like I’m still transitioning into getting healthier, and I think Take Care of Yourself is that.”

He also said the special includes personal moments, including a bit about his daughter joining him on stage. “The little nuggets, like my daughter being on stage playing, it’s her time now,” Foxx said. “I’m thankful that there’s enough love out there for me to be able to talk like this.”

What’s next for Jamie Foxx

Foxx, who will soon welcome his third child, is also attached to the upcoming project Fight for ’84, which he referenced during the interview without offering further detail. Take Care of Yourself streams on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ starting Oct. 7, giving fans their first look at how he has reshaped his comedy since his health scare.
