First-Person Shooter Games

FPS games news and guides, covering Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Valorant and more.

Total Apex Take

The FPS genre has fully bifurcated into esports-grade tactical shooters that dominate attention and a graveyard of extraction-shooter hopefuls trying to catch lightning twice.

Call of Duty's annual cycle is still running, but Black Ops 6 leaning on Warzone integration and game-pass-day-one availability says more about Microsoft's distribution strategy than it does about shooter innovation. The real competitive center of gravity sits with Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant, which have essentially cornered tactical-shooter esports and keep grinding out seasonal content instead of sequels. Extraction shooters had their moment with Escape from Tarkov's mainstream crossover and Arc Raiders generating real buzz heading into its launch window, but the field is littered with shutdowns and relaunches (The Cycle: Frontier, Hunt: Showdown's ongoing reinvention) that show how brutally hard the format is to sustain. Single-player FPS campaigns, meanwhile, had a genuine bright spot in DOOM: The Dark Ages doubling down on brawler-shooter mechanics instead of chasing realism.

What's working is commitment to a clear identity — Counter-Strike and Valorant succeed precisely because they refuse to be anything but a tight, round-based tactical shooter, and DOOM: The Dark Ages works because id Software ignored the industry's drift toward slower, cover-based shooting. What's overdone is the extraction-shooter gold rush itself: everyone saw Tarkov's cult following and assumed the genre was an easy live-service goldmine, when in practice retention and onboarding for permadeath-loot shooters are brutally difficult, and most entrants have proven that. Battle royale cannibalized a lot of what used to be straightforward multiplayer FPS innovation, and Call of Duty's identity crisis — part campaign series, part battle royale platform, part live-service economy — is the clearest symptom of a genre that's stopped trusting itself to just be a shooter.

Keep an eye on Arc Raiders as the test case for whether a new extraction shooter can actually hold an audience past launch month, and watch whether DOOM: The Dark Ages' brawler-shooter success nudges other single-player FPS studios away from slow, grounded combat and back toward speed and spectacle. The genre's next real pivot point is less a new game than a question: does tactical shooting stay locked to Valorant and CS2's duopoly, or does a new entrant actually crack that esports lock.

About First-Person Shooter Games

First-person shooters (FPS) are games played from the shooter's own point of view, emphasizing aiming precision, movement, and tactical decision-making. The genre dates back to early titles like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom in the early 1990s and has since split into numerous sub-styles, from fast-paced arena shooters to slower, tactical team-based competitive titles.

Today's FPS landscape spans massive annual franchises like Call of Duty, long-running tactical esports staples like Counter-Strike, and newer hero-based shooters like Valorant and Overwatch that blend traditional gunplay with character abilities.
