Fans of the Scream series are in luck with some exciting news. However, fans will have to wait some time for the upcoming installment. Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with its fifth installment. The fifth installment was released in 2022, followed by its sequel, Scream VI, a year later.
Both films were box office hits, ensuring the soon-to-come seventh installment of the series. While the upcoming seventh installment initially seemed to be on the fast track to success following Scream VI, it has experienced some dramatic changes behind the scenes.
What to Know About Scream 7
Neve Campbell confirmed her return as Sidney Prescott, sharing her announcement on social media in March that she would be returning to the slasher horror series. Her casting comes after Melissa Berrera (Sam Carpenter), star of the fifth and sixth installments, was fired from the project due to her stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Things took another dramatic turn after her co-star Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter) wouldn’t be returning either due to scheduling conflicts.
However, the decision was reportedly made months before the news hit the public, and it wasn’t believed or confirmed that it was connected to Berrera’s firing. The franchise began in 1996, starting with Wes Craven’s original film. It followed residents of the fictional town of Woodsboro and their battles against brutal serial killers who wear a ghost mask and target Sidney Prescott. Craven passed away in 2015, and the previous two installments were made since his passing.
Yet, there is no trailer for Scream 7 and production has not even begun filming. Besides Campbell and, most likely, Courtney Cox starring in the movie, not much information has been said about other cast members. There is no official word if the surviving character Kirby, played by Hayden Panettiere, will return to the movie.
Scream 7 Updates
Tyler Gillet and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who revived the Scream franchise following Craven’s passing, will not be directing the seventh film. While they are the executive producers for the movie, the directing duties initially fell to Happy Death Day and Freaky filmmaker Christopher Landon.
However, on December 2023, he left the project. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “What was once a dream job became a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved but it’s time to move on.” Landon did not share details of what led to his decision.
Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, will direct the upcoming seventh installment. Although Sidney will return, not all of her four co-stars have confirmed their return. Neither Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks-Martin) nor Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks-Martin) have announced their return to the franchise.
Final Thoughts
Whether Scream 7 will utilize the Core Four and continue with those characters remains to be seen. There hasn’t been an official plot, as it’s probably still being kept under wraps. Scream 7 is planned to hit theatres on February 27, 2026.
