A vehicle drove onto a field during a soccer game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, killing two people and injuring several others, authorities said. The driver was taken into custody, according to CNN.
The Wichita soccer complex vehicle incident unfolded as a game was underway, though authorities have not released details on how many teams or players were on the field at the time or the age groups involved.
What Happened At The Wichita Soccer Complex
The vehicle entered the field during active play, striking people at the scene. Two people died as a result, and multiple others were injured, CNN reported. The exact number of injured people and their conditions have not been released.
Officers responded and took the driver into custody. Authorities have not disclosed the driver’s identity, and no charges have been announced as of Saturday evening.
What It Means For Public Safety
Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department addressed concerns about ongoing danger to the community, saying “there is no additional ongoing threat to the public from that driver.”
That statement indicates police do not believe anyone else was involved or that further incidents are connected to the driver now in custody. Moses did not say whether the vehicle entering the field was intentional or accidental, and police have not released a motive.
