Important Disney Data Leaked Online By Hacktivist Group

The Walt Disney Company has supposedly been hacked by the self-proclaimed anti-AI group Nullbulge. Disney is still investigating the incident, but according to the Wall Street Journal, the leak most notably includes internal communications from Disney’s Slack channels.

Slack is a popular messaging and communications app utilized by major companies like Disney. Slack allows companies to create individual private chat groups within a larger group to quickly transmit information, including sensitive kinds, to the correct teams. However, when the wrong people have access, you get a situation like the one Disney is struggling with now.

Disney’s Catastrophic Loss

CNN received an email directly from the hacktivist group, which claimed to have access to over 1,000 GB of information from Disney. To put that number into perspective, the average iPhone user can store about 128 GB on their device. Nearly 10 iPhones of data!

The WSJ also received communications directly from NullBulge, wherein the pro-artist group claimed to have info about future developments for Disney+, ESPN, and Disneyland Paris, as well as general information about software development, employee assessments, and, strangely, multiple photos of employees’ pets. We all love seeing photos of pets, but not like this. How will Disney come back from a data leak like that?

Who Is Nullbulge?

According to the group’s website (which we do recommend visiting, but if you do so, do so with caution or view it through Eric Parker’s YouTube channel), their mission is about “protecting artists’ rights and ensuring fair compensation for their work.” Their blog contains this tongue-in-cheek apology to individuals and companies alike:

“We are sorry we had to do that to you, but we only do it if you have committed one of our sins: Art theft, Crypto Promotion, AI-generated artwork, Theft from Patreon or other platforms that support artists. Did we mess up? Do you want to provide restitution? Maybe you want to pay us a lil crypto to learn exactly how we did it?” The group then encourages any interested parties to reach out to them.

Nullbulge Vs The Mouse

Nullbulge posted a countdown to their hack on X Monday afternoon and released the fruits of their labor the following day: “Anything we could get our hands on, we downloaded and packaged up. Want to see what goes on behind the doors? go grab it.”

So how did the Russian-based group get access in the first place? According to them, it was all thanks to one man whom the group doxxed after he attempted to shut them out of the system midway through the operation. Ethics have skipped over this group.

On the surface, the group’s cause seems to be a noble one, especially when pitted up against the Disney Corporation, which has come under fire in recent years for their treatment of artists as well as other employees and consumers. But what do you think? Did Disney get what was coming to it? Let us know in the comments!
