Among the “Avengers: Secret Wars” rumors, one claims the original “X-Men” cast is returning to the movie. The rumor surfaced before the sad news that legendary actor Sir Patrick Stewart died Oct. 28 at his home in Los Angeles at 86, but it takes on new significance if true. Stewart played Professor X in Fox’s “X-Men” franchise, and his portrayal of the mutant leader remains one of the most iconic performances in comic book movie history.
“Avengers: Secret Wars” Rumors Surface as “Avengers: Doomsday” Nears
ComicBookMovie’s Josh Wilding reported Oct. 27 that insider Daniel Richtman says the original X-Men will return in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The rumor is a twist. “Avengers: Doomsday,” which hits theaters Dec. 18, was expected to be the original cast’s final send-off. Marvel Studios has not confirmed the claim, so treat the rumor as speculation, not confirmation.
On X, the fan account MCU Film News posted Oct. 26 that the original X-Men will reportedly return in the movie, crediting Richtman (@DanielRPK). Richtman did not elaborate on his claim about the original “X-Men” cast. Stewart was part of that conversation. On Oct. 22, before Stewart’s death, ComicBookMovie reported rumors that he and his fellow “X-Men” co-star and close friend, Sir Ian McKellen, would appear in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, Marvel never confirmed Stewart for the movie.
Christopher Abbott Rules Out an “Avengers: Doomsday” Appearance
In an interview Rolling Stone published Oct. 25, Christopher Abbott, who will play Professor X in the MCU’s “X-Men” reboot, ruled out appearing in “Avengers: Doomsday.” “I’m not in that,” he said. “I gotta do the ‘X-Men’ movie first before any of that stuff.” To make sure no one thought he was keeping a secret, he added, “No coyness, I’m not in that movie.” Abbott was not asked about “Avengers: Secret Wars” by name. The untitled “X-Men” film is scheduled to open in theaters May 5, 2028.
The Multiverse Saga has had a rocky road, and fans want a strong finish. That puts the weight on the Russo brothers, and every update, these “Avengers: Secret Wars” rumors included, gets measured against it.
“Avengers: Doomsday” Will Be Patrick Stewart’s Final Film
Marvel confirmed “Avengers: Doomsday” will be Stewart’s final film. It marks his ninth time playing Charles Xavier on the big screen, a run that began with 2000’s “X-Men.” He returned for “X2: X-Men United” in 2003 and “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006, then made brief appearances in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” in 2009 and “The Wolverine” in 2013. He reunited with the original cast for “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in 2014, and “Logan” in 2017 drew widespread praise. In 2022, Stewart made his MCU debut as an alternate-universe Xavier in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Marvel Studios paid tribute to Stewart on social media Oct. 29. The statement read: “All of us at Marvel Studios are deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart. Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from ‘X-Men’ to ‘Logan’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.”
Fans will see Stewart as Xavier one last time when “Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters Dec. 18. “Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to follow Dec. 17, 2027. Beyond Professor X, Stewart was best known as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in the “Star Trek” universe. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2010 for his contributions to drama. Following a career that spanned six decades, Stewart leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. While the entertainment industry and the public mourn his passing, his work will continue to inspire generations of fans. Our thoughts are with Stewart’s family, friends, colleagues and fans as they mourn.
