The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda news and guides, Nintendo's long-running action-adventure franchise.

Total Apex Take

Tears of the Kingdom raised the bar for what an open-world Zelda can be — and the series is expanding into film and spin-off territory for the first time in decades.

“Echoes of Wisdom” putting Zelda herself in the lead role for the first time in a mainline game was a bigger deal than its modest scope suggested — nearly 40 years into the series, it was the first time the title character actually played the title role, using a genuinely different creation-based mechanic rather than reusing Link's moveset.

A live-action Zelda film from the Super Mario Bros. Movie's producing team is now in active development, which carries real risk given how uneven video-game-to-film adaptations remain as a category, even after Mario's success suggested Nintendo had cracked the formula.

Our take: Tears of the Kingdom's building and fusion systems set a new bar other open-world games are still catching up to, and the bigger question for the series now is whether Nintendo treats the film as a one-off experiment or the start of a broader Zelda media expansion the way Mario became one.

About The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda is Nintendo's long-running action-adventure franchise, following the hero Link across the kingdom of Hyrule in a recurring quest to rescue Princess Zelda and defeat the villain Ganon. Since its 1986 debut, the series has become known for its puzzle-filled dungeons, iconic orchestral music, and influential open-world design.

Breath of the Wild (2017) and its sequel Tears of the Kingdom significantly reshaped the franchise's approach to open-world exploration, earning widespread critical acclaim and influencing open-world game design well beyond Nintendo's own output.
