Super Mario

Super Mario news and guides, Nintendo's flagship platforming franchise.

Total Apex Take

Nintendo finally cracked the code on turning Mario into a movie franchise instead of a one-off, and it's reshaping how the company treats its IP everywhere else.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" wasn't just a hit, it was one of the biggest animated openings ever, and Nintendo and Illumination moved quickly to lock in a sequel rather than treat it as lightning in a bottle. Shigeru Miyamoto's hands-on involvement with Chris Meledandri's team, paired with Mario Kart World anchoring the Switch 2 launch, shows Nintendo now building Mario as a year-round multimedia presence rather than just a game release calendar.

What stands out to us is how deliberately Nintendo is sequencing this: a movie to pull in non-gamers, a Switch 2 killer app to convert that audience, and theme park expansion (Super Nintendo World) to monetize both. The real test is the movie sequel — Nintendo has never had to prove it can do this twice, and a soft follow-up would say more about the ceiling of movie-ified video games than anything else in the genre right now.

About Super Mario

Super Mario is Nintendo's flagship franchise and one of the best-selling video game series of all time, following the plumber Mario (and often his brother Luigi) across platforming adventures to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. Since debuting in 1985, Mario has become one of the most recognizable characters in entertainment, extending well beyond games into film, theme parks, and merchandise.

Beyond mainline platformers, the Mario franchise encompasses numerous spin-off series, including Mario Kart, Mario Party, and various sports titles, making "Mario" one of the broadest brand umbrellas in all of gaming.
