HBO Max

HBO and HBO Max movies, originals and premieres.

Total Apex Take

HBO Max won the argument over its own name, and now it's fighting a much bigger battle over who gets to own it at all.

The reversal back to HBO Max in 2025 was a rare case of a media giant publicly admitting a rebrand was a mistake, and it landed just as Warner Bros. Discovery moved forward with plans to split into two companies — one built around Warner Bros. film/TV and HBO Max, the other holding the cable networks — only for that process to attract acquisition interest from Paramount Skydance, Netflix, and Comcast all reportedly circling the streaming-and-studios side. Through all of that corporate noise, the actual programming kept performing: House of the Dragon and The Last of Us remain two of streaming's most-watched prestige dramas, and a new Harry Potter television series is now in production for the platform.

Our take is that HBO Max's content strategy isn't the problem WBD needs to solve — the Casey Bloys-era programming bar is still the industry standard other streamers measure themselves against. What's actually unresolved is ownership: whoever ends up controlling HBO Max post-split inherits a genuinely strong platform, and the real risk to subscribers isn't bad shows, it's a new owner deciding to mine the library harder or slow down the originals pipeline that built the brand's reputation in the first place.

Watch the Warner Bros. Discovery sale process as closely as the release calendar — if a buyer actually lands the streaming-and-studios business, HBO Max's programming priorities and pricing could shift faster than any single season's reviews would suggest.

About HBO Max

HBO Max launched in 2020 as Warner Bros. Discovery's flagship streaming service, combining HBO's prestige programming with the wider Warner Bros. film and TV library. The service was renamed simply 'Max' in 2023 to de-emphasize the HBO name and broaden its positioning, but Warner Bros. Discovery reversed course in 2025, restoring the HBO Max name after the rebrand drew public criticism.

The service carries day-and-date streaming premieres for many Warner Bros. theatrical releases alongside HBO's original programming and a large catalog of Warner-owned film and TV franchises.
