DC Studios co-chief James Gunn shared the first promo image for the upcoming “Mister Miracle” animated series on Oct. 19, giving fans their first look at the title character and Big Barda side by side, with a towering silhouette in the background that many fans believe is Darkseid. The image arrives as DC Studios works toward a 2028 premiere on HBO Max for the show, which adapts Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Eisner Award-winning comic run.
The reveal follows a string of updates on the adult animated project, which was first announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2025.
The Mister Miracle Series Promo Image
The newly released artwork shows Mister Miracle and Big Barda in full costume, standing together in front of a massive explosion and an army of soldiers armed with axes and hammers. Behind them looms a large shadowy figure. Fans quickly pointed to Darkseid, though DC Studios hasn’t confirmed the character’s presence in the image.
Josh Hutcherson voices Mister Miracle, while Mackenzie Davis voices Big Barda. DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran first revealed the casting in an interview with IGN, according to Polygon. The casting puts two recognizable names at the center of a series built around Scott Free, the escape artist hero whose comic adventures have long explored his ties to the New Gods.
The “Mister Miracle” series will run eight episodes at about 30 minutes each. King wrote every episode and serves as showrunner and executive producer. The show adapts King and Gerads’ 12-issue run published between 2017 and 2019, a series that won an Eisner Award and is considered one of the most acclaimed takes on the character.
What the Series Connects To in DC Comics
The source material centers on Scott Free and Big Barda, who have built a seemingly perfect life together on Earth. That life starts to unravel as war rages between their home worlds of New Genesis and Apokolips, and Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation. If that figure in the promo image is Darkseid, it mirrors the comic’s dynamic directly, putting all three in the same frame.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are producing the “Mister Miracle” series, the pair’s second adult animated show after “Creature Commandos.” Safran praised King’s work on the scripts in his IGN interview, saying King adapted the book on his own and wrote all eight episodes, and calling the result “dynamite.” Safran also credited what King learned while co-creating and executive producing the live-action HBO series “Lanterns.”
Release Timeline and What Comes Next
DC Studios is aiming for a 2028 premiere for the “Mister Miracle” series on HBO Max, Safran told Collider.
No exact premiere date has been announced beyond the 2028 target. Fans looking for updates on additional casting, animation footage or a firm release date will need to wait for DC Studios’ next announcement. Gunn has said the DCU intends for primary castings to carry across animation and live action, so Hutcherson and Davis could matter well beyond this series, though neither has been confirmed for a live-action role.
