DC

The latest on DC Comics, the DCU, Batman, Superman and more.

Total Apex Take

James Gunn didn't just reboot the DCU, he made the reboot itself the story, and Superman's reception suggests it's working.

After Zack Snyder's version of the DCEU limped to a close and both Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Joker: Folie à Deux underperformed in 2023 and 2024, Gunn and Peter Safran wiped the continuity slate and opened their Gods and Monsters chapter with Creature Commandos as an animated table-setter in late 2024, followed by Superman in the summer of 2025 — a brighter, more sincere take on the character that landed as both a critical and commercial reset for the brand. Peacemaker's second season followed as a direct tonal bridge between the old and new DC.

Our take: the smartest thing Gunn has done isn't any single casting choice, it's being transparent about the DCU as a ten-year outline with a known shape, which is exactly the thing Marvel lost control of during the Multiverse Saga. Treating Superman's optimism as a deliberate rebuke of the Snyder-era grimness was a real creative bet, not a safe one, and it paid off specifically because DC had nothing left to lose after a decade of inconsistent tone.

The real test isn't Superman, it's whether Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and the Lanterns HBO series can sustain that same specific voice without Gunn directing every entry personally — a shared universe lives or dies on whether other filmmakers can hit the tone he set, not on his own output alone.

About DC

DC is one of the two major American comic-book publishers, home to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League since the medium's earliest days. Owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, the DC brand spans comics, animation, video games, and live-action film and television, with character rights dating back to the 1930s debut of Superman.

DC's live-action film slate has gone through several distinct eras, from Christopher Nolan's grounded Dark Knight trilogy to the interconnected "DC Extended Universe" of the 2010s, and most recently James Gunn and Peter Safran's relaunched DC Universe, which began charting a single connected continuity across film, television, and animation starting with Superman in 2025.

Warner Bros. Discovery restructured its film and television output in 2023 under the new DC Studios banner, led by writer-director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran as co-CEOs. The move was positioned as a reset after years of uneven DC Extended Universe films, with a new connected continuity (branded the DCU) planned out across film, television, and animation.
