Overwatch Season 4 Hero Guide: Fortifying the Frontline as Orisa

|
Orisa in Overwatch on Numbani

The Overwatch roster is starting to settle. It is time to revisit the rest of the hero roster. Orisa is the Defender of Numbani. As a result, she is one of the best defensive tanks. When played correctly, opponents need to invest resources to stop her. Orisa’s strength comes from her cooldowns. Rotating them effectively is key to becoming unkillable. We have everything you need to know about Orisa.

Orisa’s Kit Breakdown and Tips

Augmented Fusion Driver – Automatic heat-based weapon.

Orisa is one of the only heroes in Overwatch without an ammo limit. Instead, she has a heat weapon. Continuously firing causes Orisa’s weapon to overheat. If it overheats, you can not fire. Not firing the weapon decreases heat. Always try to prevent the weapon from overheating. You lose total damage every time it does.

Energy Javelin – Launch your Javelin at an enemy to stun and knock them back. More effective if the enemy hits a wall.

Energy Javelin’s primary use is to knock back incoming enemies. Keep heroes like Reinhardt or Ramattara from closing the distance. Pushing enemies into a wall increases damage and stun duration. The damage is better than most expect. Follow the stun with primary fire to kill targets.

Fortify – Gain Temporary health, reduce all damage taken, and become unstoppable.

Fortify is Orisa’s best survival tool. It gives her a burst of health and prevents critical hits. The unstoppable also removes and denies Crowd Control. Fortify is a precious cooldown. Do not use it unless you have to.

Javelin Spin – Spin your Javelin to destroy projectiles and block melee attacks, while also pushing enemies and increasing forward speed.

Javelin Spin is a secondary ability to increase Orisa’s survivability. There are four main use cases:

  • Block projectiles
  • Keep melee enemies at bay
  • Close the gap on enemies
  • Push players off the map

Javelin Spin is your more flexible defensive ability. The way you use it depends on the fight. Against enemies with spam damage, use it to reduce damage taken and close the gap. However, you may need it to prevent a Reinhardt from walking on your backline.

Terra Surge – Sweep in enemies and anchor down, gaining the effects of Fortify and charging up a surge of damage. Use primary fire to unleash the surge early.

Terra Surge also has multiple uses. The ultimate is perfect for catching grouped-up enemies. You rarely let the ultimate charge fully. Often, some damage is better than nothing. Terra Surge can also be a last resort. You gain the Fortify effects to increase your durability. Never rely on catching five enemies with Terra Surge; one or two is more effective.

Becoming Unkillable – Orisa Tips

Rotating Cooldowns

Learning to rotate cooldowns is vital. Overlapping abilities should never happen. The only one you can spam is Energy Javelin. It has the lowest cooldown of the three. Always have one ability available as an emergency. That includes Terra Surge in extreme cases. Fortify is generally the best as the panic button. However, there are some situations where you use Fortify first. You might need to dodge Shatter, or walk out of a Graviton Surge. That means Javelin Spin becomes your emergency ability. Judge the situation as you proceed. The more you play, the more you learn.

Not a Poke Hero

While Orisa has some poke damage, she is not a poke hero. She loses out in the poke war to other tanks like Sigma and Domina. The time spent poking depends on the enemy team comp. If they have more poke damage, play close-range. Otherwise, switching may be your best course.

Moving From Cover to Cover

We might be sounding like a broken record on this one. Natural cover is the best way to increase survivability. The cover forces opponents to overextend for kills. One or two seconds will make a difference. It might buy you time to get an ability back. Always be wary of where you stand and where you move. It will become natural to your gameplay eventually.
