Mindy Kaling Producing Animated Comedy Movie With Paramount Pictures
Mindy Kaling is no stranger to writing and producing television. She was the creator and producer of The Mindy Project on Hulu and wrote 25 out of the 117 episodes. She is also one of the executive producers for the adult animated series Velma on Max. Now, Mindy Kaling is teaming up with Paramount Pictures for a new comedy. Here’s everything we know so far!
Mindy Partnering With Paramount
Paramount Animation is currently working with Mindy Kaling to create an animated comedy. The animation studio is known for The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Sherlock Gnomes, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and more. It’s also making the upcoming Smurfs animated film. Kaling’s project with the studio is currently unnamed but already has multiple producers aside from Kaling herself. Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith, a film producer who worked on 2014’s Annie, has been brought onto the project alongside Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter. Jay Brown was also brought onto Kaling’s project. He also produced Annie with Smith and both.
Jay Brown also produced for Rhianna’s Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 2 and The Smurfs, which will be released in 2025. Brown, Smith, and Carter co-founded Roc Nation, a well-known entertainment/management company. The movie’s plot is unknown, but it promises to “take audiences to a world with a wish-fulfillment message that is comedic and heartfelt.” The film has also secured fresh writers who don’t have any known writing credits: Aathil Chaturvedi and Justin Soul.
Mindy Kaling and Animation
Mindy Kaling is no stranger to the world of animation. She voiced the character of Disgust in Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out and Val in Monsters at Work. She also voiced one of the main antagonists in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, Taffyta. Most recently, however, Kaling produced the Max show Velma. The show is based on the characters of Scooby-Doo but in an adult medium. Kaling didn’t only executive produce the series, she also voiced the titular character; Velma. The adult animation currently has a 1.6 rating on IMDb and is considered a colossal failure by fans. Even still, the show got a second season and has yet to be officially canceled by Max.
Aside from her work in animation, Kaling is also known for her writing credits. Her writing credits include The Mindy Project, The Office, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Never Have I Ever, and more. IMDb said Kaling has also written a screenplay for the upcoming Legally Blonde 3. It’s unclear if she will write for the upcoming Paramount project, especially because she doesn’t have any animation writing credits. Kaling is currently only listed as a producer of the film, so we are unsure of the full extent of her involvement in the project.
Final Thoughts
Mindy Kaling’s partnering with Paramount, Jay Brown, and Ty Ty Smith spells an exciting film. Kaling, Brown, and Smith all have track records of producing incredible movies, and it’s interesting to see where this new animated work will go. This is a film you don’t want to miss!
