Walt Disney Studios

Walt Disney Studios movies, from animated classics to Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars releases.

Total Apex Take

Disney's studio is in a strange split-personality moment — animated sequels and Marvel's Deadpool are printing money while its live-action remake strategy just produced one of the decade's most notorious bombs.

Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 were both massive hits in 2024, and Deadpool & Wolverine turned the long-awaited Fox-Marvel integration into one of the year's biggest box office events, proving Disney's sequel-and-franchise instincts still work when the underlying property is strong. But 2025's live-action Snow White became a genuine cautionary tale — hampered by behind-the-scenes controversy, muted promotion, and a lukewarm reception that made it one of the most talked-about underperformers in recent memory, intensifying scrutiny of Disney's long-running live-action remake pipeline.

Our take is that Disney is now visibly more selective about which remakes it greenlights and how it markets them, because Snow White demonstrated that the strategy's margin for error has shrunk considerably — audiences are no longer automatically showing up just because the title is familiar. The studio's real strength remains sequels to recent, beloved originals and Marvel properties with built-in demand; it's the diminishing-returns live-action-remake trend that looks increasingly like a 2010s playbook running out of road.

Watch how Disney handles its next few remake announcements and whether Bob Iger's extended tenure brings a genuine recalibration toward original or sequel-driven films over further live-action adaptations — Snow White's reception made that choice far more consequential than it would have been a few years ago.

About Walt Disney Studios

Walt Disney Studios is the film production arm of The Walt Disney Company, tracing back to the animation studio Walt and Roy Disney founded in 1923. What began with short cartoons and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length cel-animated feature, has grown into a sprawling production house whose releases now also carry the Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Studios banners.

Beyond its own animated and live-action slate, Walt Disney Studios distributes films for Disney's other production labels, making it one of the most consistently dominant studios at the global box office in any given year, alongside powering Disney+ with original and library film content.
