The Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls news and guides, Bethesda's long-running open-world RPG franchise.

Total Apex Take

The Elder Scrolls franchise is coasting on nostalgia and a game that's over a decade old while Bethesda's attention — and credibility — has been elsewhere.

Starfield's 2023 launch underperformed the sky-high expectations built up over years of hype, and Bethesda has since redirected its top talent toward The Elder Scrolls VI and the next Fallout entry, both still without firm release windows as of early 2026. Meanwhile Skyrim keeps getting re-released on new hardware almost as a running joke at this point, and The Elder Scrolls Online remains the franchise's actual financial engine as a subscription-driven live service rather than anything resembling the mainline single-player experience fans are waiting for.

Our take is that Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda hasn't yet translated into faster or more confident execution — if anything, Starfield's reception seems to have made the studio more cautious about Elder Scrolls VI's scope and timeline, not less. The franchise's goodwill is still enormous, built almost entirely on Skyrim's decade-plus cultural footprint, but that goodwill has a shelf life, and Bethesda is spending it rather than renewing it.

What matters most now is whether Microsoft's multiplatform push changes the calculus on Elder Scrolls VI's exclusivity and timeline — a game this anticipated arriving day-one on PlayStation as well as Xbox would be a bigger strategic shift than the game itself.

About The Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls is Bethesda Game Studios' long-running open-world role-playing game franchise, set in the fantasy continent of Tamriel and known for its deep player freedom and richly detailed lore. Since Arena in 1994, the series has become one of the most influential open-world RPG franchises, with Skyrim in particular becoming a cultural touchstone re-released across numerous platforms over more than a decade.

Bethesda also operates The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer entry that lets players explore much of Tamriel together, running alongside the long-awaited development of the next mainline single-player installment.
