Julian LeFay, the former chief engineer of Bethesda and father of Elder Scrolls, has died at the age of 59 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He had stepped away from his work as a game developer to spend time with friends and family.

Julian LeFay 1965-2025

Julian LeFay’s career started with Amiga and NES, but he would go on to join Bethesda in 1987, which had been founded in 1986. He became Chief Engineer and directed the creation of iconic games like Elder Scrolls 1 and 2, Daggerfall, and Battlespire. In Elder Scrolls, the deity Julianos is named for him. In 2019, he co-founded OnceLost Games and started work on a new open world RPG, Wayward Realms, as a spiritual successor to Daggerfall.

The OnceLost Games team shared a touching post announcing the passing of Julian LeFay.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we inform our community of the passing of Julian LeFay, our beloved Technical Director and co-founder of OnceLost Games.”

“Julian LeFay was not just a colleague — he was a visionary who fundamentally shaped the gaming industry as we know it today. Known as the ‘Father of The Elder Scrolls’, Julian directed the creation of legendary titles including Elder Scrolls 1 and 2: Arena, Daggerfall, and Battlespire. His pioneering work established the foundation for open-world RPGs and influenced countless developers and games that followed.”

“Throughout his courageous battle with cancer, Julian never wavered in his passion for The Wayward Realms. Even during his illness, he continued to share his vision with our team, mentor our developers, and ensure that every aspect of the game reflected his commitment to creating something truly extraordinary. His strength, determination, and unwavering focus inspire us all.”

In a statement on X, Bethesda wrote,

“It’s with great sadness we learn of the passing of Julian LeFay.

He was the driving force in the creation of The Elder Scrolls and the foundations of Bethesda as a game studio.

Simply put, without Julian, we would not be here today. If you had the opportunity to work with Julian, you were blessed to know a one-of-a-kind force of nature, who pushed everyone to create something special.

His work and spirit will live on both in our memories and in our games.”

Adventure On

Our hearts and condolences go out to the friends, family, colleagues, and fans feeling this loss today. We’re certain the team at OnceLost Games will put forth a game that he would be proud of. Co-founder Ted Peterson, also a veteran of Bethesda, continues to lead the project. They are “more committed than ever to bringing The Wayward Realms to life exactly as Julian envisioned it”.
