BBC

BBC shows, the British broadcaster behind Doctor Who, Sherlock and decades of UK television.

Total Apex Take

Still the gold standard for prestige British drama and documentary — while fighting a genuinely existential funding fight at home.

The licence fee model that funds the BBC is under real political pressure, with government reviews repeatedly floating subscription or ad-funded alternatives, even as BBC-produced or co-produced shows remain some of the most consistently well-reviewed television being made anywhere. That tension — critical and cultural strength against a shaky funding future — is the actual story of the BBC right now, more than any single show.

The Disney+ co-production deal for “Doctor Who” is the clearest example of where this is heading: the BBC increasingly needs international streaming money to fund the kind of ambitious genre and drama programming it used to fund alone, which changes who the shows are ultimately made for.

Our take: judge the BBC less by any one series and more by whether the funding settlement that gets decided in the next few years preserves its ability to make documentary and current-affairs work that doesn't have to clear a commercial bar — that's the output a subscription-funded BBC would be most likely to lose.

About BBC

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is the United Kingdom's public service broadcaster, operating multiple television channels, radio stations, and the BBC iPlayer streaming service. Funded primarily through the UK license fee, the BBC has produced a wide range of globally influential programming across drama, comedy, documentary, and news.

Internationally, the BBC is particularly well known for long-running genre staples like Doctor Who, prestige literary adaptations, and acclaimed documentary and nature programming, with many of its scripted series co-produced or distributed abroad through partners like BBC Studios.
