Teamfight Tactics Set 18: Unraveling the Secrets of Two Sworn Enemies
Teamfight Tactics Set 18 has two interesting three-cost champions. They share the same trait, but it makes them unique. Without an augment, running the two units together deactivates the trait. Those two units are Kha’Zix and Rengar. Each one scales with takedowns. That makes finding early copies important to get them rolling. One of the augments allows you to run both units alongside each other for additional bonuses.
Teamfight Tactics Set 18: What is Rival?
Rival is an Origin Trait that applies to two units in Set 18. Those units are Kha’Zix and Rengar. By default, the trait only functions when one of the two units is on your board. Your rival gains stacks per takedown. Each takedown awards one stack. A takedown on a Rival champion grants three stacks. Kha’Zix and Rengar utilize the stacks differently. At various thresholds, Kha’Zix can choose one of four Class Traits to evolve to. The current options are:
- Executioner
- Rapidfire
- Ravager
- Spellweaver
Each evolution allows him to add one of the four traits. Rengar, on the other hand, grants your team gold per X amount of takedowns. At max stacks, Rengar grants your AD based on his takedown stacks. The number of stacks for each may vary throughout the set’s lifetime.
Teamfight Tactics Set 18: Igniting as Kha’Zix

Kha’Zix shares traits with three champions from the Inferno trait. Akali, Varus, and Kennen. The best Spellweaver to play is Fiddlesticks, as he gives Spellweaver and Flora Fatalis, which is a strong flex trait. He also has Defender to pair with Shen. Amumu, Vi, and Nidalee round out the composition for the final Inferno unit, and to add Primal, Juggernaut, and Adaptor. With Kha’Zix being a three-cost unit, you want to roll at level seven for him. You can roll for Fiddlesticks as well if you have enough copies. Before finding Kennen, you can play Soraka as your Executioner. In terms of evolution order, focus on the traits that you have for him. Likely, your path will look like this:
- Ravager –> Spellweaver –> Rapidfire –> Executioner
Rapidfire is the worst trait for Kha’Zix, but it does help the rest of your team.
As for itemization, the current best is Hand of Justice, Jeweled Gauntlet, and Rabadan’s Deathcap. Because his Mana cost is low, getting as many kills as possible as fast as possible is important. Itemization and team composition may change in the future.
Teamfight Tactics Set 18: Rengar’s Fortunes

With Rengar not gaining any traits, compositions around him are not as set in stone. You can play more flexible units and traits to increase his value. Currently, the best composition uses four Vanguard, three Riftbeast, two Rapidfire, and two Ravager. The board that everyone is running on the PBE at the moment is:
- Rengar
- Diana
- Hecarim
- Mama Beak
- Brambleback
- Sentinel
- Taric
You want to reroll at level seven for your three-cost champions. You can look to three-star any of your four three-cost units. Rengar is the primary unit to focus on. After that, your next carry is Mama Beak. Hecarim is the tank, but Sentinel can replace him if you do not three-star Hecarim. Diana is the last of the four three-star units to prioritize. Edge of Night is vital for Rengar. Because he gains healing for his trait, having additional damage from Deathblade and Infinity Edge allows him to run through opposition boards.
Teamfight Tactics Set 18: Unrivaled
The Unrivaled augment allows you to run Kha’Zix and Rengar simultaneously. If Kha’Zix gains Mana from his takedowns, Rengar gets 100% of that Mana. On the other hand, Rengar’s heal heals Kha’Zix for 50%. They each gain their own takedowns, and their stacks function the same as if they were separate. Because Kha’Zix is tied to his traits, the current composition for this board is similar to his. You will have to drop the Primal trait for the Unrivaled board unless you can reach level 10. Otherwise, play Maokai at level 9 to fill the Juggernaut slot. Itemization for the carries remains identical.
