Mauga in Overwatch

The Overwatch roster is starting to settle. It is time to revisit the rest of the hero roster. Mauga is a controversial tank. Many despise playing against him. He has been one of the best tanks at various points since his release. Mauga can take over a lobby in moments. We are here to guide you towards victory and to stomp your way up the ladder.

Mauga’s Kit Breakdown and Tips

Berserker – Gain temporary health when dealing critical damage.

Mauga’s passive is vital to his survivability. You gain temporary health for 50% of the critical damage dealt, up to 150 total. The good news for Mauga is that he can land critical damage without hitting an opponent’s crit spot. His chainguns allow him to deal critical damage.

Incendiary Chaingun – An automatic weapon that ignites enemies on repeated impacts.

Incendiary Chaingun is his primary fire. Incendiary Chaingun is the better option for longer ranges. Using both weapons together increases the weapon spread. Incendiary Chaingun functions fine by itself. The other does not.

Volatile Chaingun – An automatic weapon that deals critical damage to burning enemies.

Volatile Chaingun is his secondary fire. It can critically strike against any burning enemies. That includes burns from other heroes:

  • Anran’s Ignition
  • Ashe’s Dynamite
  • Torbjorn’s Molten Core

Volatile Chaingun is significantly weaker than Incendiary Chaingun against non-burning targets. In most cases, you use both Chainguns together. The Incendiary Chaingun ignitions increase Volatile Chaingun’s damage and improve survivability.

Overrun – Charge forward to stomp and launch enemies. You are unstoppable while charging.

Mauga’s only mobility tool. You can turn during the charge to change the angle. At the end of the charge, Mauga stomps the ground, dealing damage to nearby enemies and knocking them down. You can end his Charge without the stomp by pressing the key again. Ideally, you want to land a direct hit on a target when you engage.

Cardiac Overdrive – Gain damage reduction, and nearby allies heal themselves by dealing damage.

Cardiac Overdrive is a great tool to increase Mauga’s sustain. You heal for 100% of the damage dealt. Allies only heal for 50% of the damage dealt. Ideally, use Cardiac in the midst of a fight. Using it as a poke tool will greatly decrease your value as Mauga.

Cage Fight – Deploy a barrier that traps you and enemies. Automatically reloads Mauga’s chainguns at the start of the ultimate.

Cage Fight creates a barrier enemies can not shoot through. Your allies can fire into the barrier. Catching one or two players in Cage Fight is better than the team. You can pick them off before their teammates respond. Five-player Cage Fights are only better with another ultimate. A Death Blossom inside a Cage Fight is deadly. Opponents can destroy the barrier.

Finding the Correct Target

The best heroes to sustain off are tanks. Their bigger hitbox and larger HP pool dramatically increase your survivability. Orisa is the only tank you should avoid. Her Fortify denies the critical damage from Volatile Chaingun. Always engage on a priority target. That is usually a hero without mobility, or someone who threatens you. Ana is an ideal target as she fits both categories. Sojourn is another good target. However, she can dodge your engage.

Engaging Close to Natural Cover

Unless you have won the fight, always engage close to natural cover. You can take cover even if you miss the engage. Not every engage ends in a kill. Solo queue has a lower success rate. Mauga is best with heroes that can follow up his slams. However, not everyone in solo queue wants to play synergistic heroes or is always looking at you.

Engaging With Cardiac Overdrive

In neutral fights, you should never engage without Cardiac Overdrive. The cooldown is vital for mid-fight sustain. You can survive through most situations. It can even buy you enough time to live an Ana’s Biotic Grenade. You should poke before the fight. However, if you have to use Cardiac Overdrive while poking, you stayed too long.
