Mignolaverse hardcovers: 3 stunning Hellboy books due 2027

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola at WonderCon 2009; his Mignolaverse hardcovers continue in 2027

Mike Mignola’s sprawling horror universe is getting three new Mignolaverse hardcovers in 2027, and they cover a lot of ground: Victorian steampunk espionage, a post-apocalyptic reckoning and a 1960s spy thriller. Dark Horse Comics revealed the trio in an exclusive with AIPT Comics, giving longtime Hellboy readers a roadmap for where the Mignolaverse is headed next.

The slate pulls together work from Mignola and writer Chris Roberson, a veteran of the Hellboy universe, alongside artists Christopher Mitten, Ben Stenbeck and Michael Avon Oeming. Together, the three books show just how far Mignola’s world has stretched beyond its original demon-hunter premise.

“The Foundry” brings steampunk spies into the fold

The first hardcover, “The Foundry,” goes on sale June 8, 2027, from Roberson and Mitten. It digs into an unexplored corner of the Mignolaverse, following a secret agency working for the Queen that investigates paranormal phenomena and mysterious technology. Characters from “Witchfinder” and “The British Paranormal Society” join the cast, hunting supernatural-powered inventions and hidden civilizations across the globe.

This collection gathers “The Foundry” #1–#4. Of the three new Mignolaverse hardcovers, this is the one for readers who’ve followed the Victorian-era spinoffs, since it looks like a chance to see those threads converge into something bigger.

Koshchei’s full saga gets the omnibus treatment

The second of the Mignolaverse hardcovers, arriving June 15, 2027, is the biggest of the three. Credited to Mignola and Stenbeck, the omnibus compiles the complete story of Koshchei, the unkillable man Baba Yaga sent after Hellboy in “Darkness Calls,” who later relives a tragic existence in Hell alongside Hellboy himself.

The omnibus also folds in the fate of Ed Grey, the Witchfinder, who gets summoned by Alice to defend the last standing realm against Morgan Le Fay. That storyline plays out in “The Serpent in the Garden: Ed Grey and the Last Battle for England” #1–#3, collected here alongside “Koshchei the Deathless” #1–#6, “Koshchei in Hell” #1–#4 and the “Sir Edward Grey: Acheron” one-shot. Extras include epilogues, a cover gallery and a sketchbook section, giving completists a reason to double-dip even if they own the single issues.

Putting Koshchei and Ed Grey’s endings in one volume suggests this collection is meant to function as a capstone for two long-running threads rather than just a convenient reprint.

“Ghost of a Ghost” brings ’60s spy-fi to the Hellboy universe

The third title, “Ghost of a Ghost,” goes on sale July 27, 2027, and breaks from the gothic horror tone that usually defines this universe. Spun out of “Giant Robot Hellboy,” it’s a psychedelic 1960s spy-fi thriller centered on superspy Agent Jian, who gains strange powers after exposure to a substance called enkeladite and gets pulled into a shadowy spy ring. The team’s mission: track down the remaining stores of enkeladite before they land in the wrong hands.

Mignola and Roberson are credited on the story, with Oeming on art. Taki Soma handles colors and Clem Robins handles letters.

Why the Mignolaverse hardcovers matter for fans

Three Mignolaverse hardcovers in the span of about seven weeks signals Dark Horse isn’t slowing down on expanding Mignola’s universe beyond the core Hellboy title. Mixing genres, from spy fiction to post-apocalyptic fantasy, shows the publisher betting that readers want variety within this shared world rather than just more demon-fighting.

It’s unclear whether more Mignolaverse announcements are coming for 2027. For now, fans have three firm dates to circle: June 8, June 15 and July 27. Readers who want to keep up with single issues in the meantime can follow our weekly comic book releases coverage and the rest of our books and comics section.
