Toei Animation

Toei Animation news and releases, the legendary studio behind Dragon Ball and One Piece.

Total Apex Take

Toei is playing the long game with its two biggest franchises, and the patience is finally paying off on both fronts.

"One Piece" is in its endgame arcs under Eiichiro Oda, and Toei has matched that with a visible upgrade in animation quality and a redesigned title-card presentation for the back stretch of the series, while "Dragon Ball Daima" gave Akira Toriyama's final creative input (before his death in 2024) a proper send-off rather than another spin-off cash-in. Netflix's live-action "One Piece" adaptation, meanwhile, has given Toei's IP a second life with viewers who'd never touch the 1,000-plus-episode anime.

We think Toei's real advantage is that it owns genuinely finite, author-driven source material in both cases, which is rarer than it sounds in an industry full of open-ended franchises milked past relevance. The thing to watch is the transition after "One Piece" wraps its manga — whether Toei can protect the anime's momentum through a true ending instead of stalling it the way long-runners usually do when the source material runs dry.

About Toei Animation

Toei Animation is one of Japan's oldest and most prolific anime studios, founded in 1948 and responsible for some of the medium's most globally recognized franchises, including Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Sailor Moon. The studio has played a defining role in bringing anime to international audiences over multiple decades.

Toei's output spans long-running weekly series that have aired continuously for years or even decades, a production model that has made several of its franchises among the longest-running and most commercially significant in anime history.
